Abstract

The present invention refers to the use of extracts from selected and stabilized cell lines comprising phenylpropanoids with high anti-oxidant capacity having a verbascoside titer of between 20% and 90% and a chromophore-free fraction of between 80% and 10%, in human and veterinary medicine, and for nutritional and cosmetic purposes.

Claims (14)

1. A method of treating one of juvenile acne, diseases of the prostate, and hair loss in a human or animal subject, the method comprising:

orally administering an effective amount of verbascoside and/or isoverbascoside to induce anti-lipoxygenase and/or anti-5-alpha reductase action in the subject, wherein the administered effective amount is between 0.1 mg and 2 g per day for a period of time between 1 and 120 days.

2. A method of using an extract prepared from a plant cell line belonging to the Oleaceae family, wherein said preparation comprises the following steps in sequence:

a) subjecting a biomass obtained following culture of said plant cell line to an enzyme deactivating treatment;

b) homogenizing the product resulting from step a);

c) separating the liquid phase of the homogenized product from cell residues by means of gravity filtration, pressure filtration or centrifugation;

d) performing an extraction of the liquid phase obtained in step c) with a hydrophobic interaction resin; and

e) recovering an extract of absorbed substances from the resin in step d) by means of elution with a mixture of alcohols having up to 6 carbon atoms in water in percentages varying from 30% up to just under 100% by volume,

said method comprising using the extract for medicine, nutrition or cosmetics, wherein said extract is used between 0.1 mg and 2 g per day for periods of time varying between 1 and 120 days and has at least one of the following properties:

anti-alpha-reductase and anti-lipoxygenase activities for the treatment of juvenile acne, diseases of the prostate, and hair loss in a human; and

said extract being orally administered in an effective amount for treating subjects suffering from juvenile acne, diseases of the prostate, and hair loss in a human.

3. The method of using the extract prepared according to claim 2 , further comprising the step of formulating the extract to be administered into a medication.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the extract is administered in doses of between 0.1 and 100 mg/kg body weight for 1-100 days.

5. The method according to claim 3 , comprising a treatment wherein the doses of extract per treatment cycle are between 0.1 and 100 mg/kg for 1-100 days.
