Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide apparatus, systems, and methods wherein pre-event and post-event analyte concentration readings associated with an event are collected and processed to determine a numerical delta. The numerical delta may be displayed on a visual display to aid in a ready determination of the affect that the event (alone or in combination with medication and/or insulin dosages) had on the analyte concentration levels. Medication and/or insulin dosages may be displayed alongside the numerical delta to gauge immediate relationships between numerical delta, dosage, and/or an associated event. Apparatus and systems for calculating and displaying the numerical delta are described, as are other aspects.

Claims (43)

1. A hand-held device for identifying and displaying event readings, the hand-held device comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor;

software stored in the memory and executable by the processor; and

a display coupled to the processor and operable to present a graphical user interface (GUI), wherein the processor executing the software is operable to:

receive at the hand-held device from a measurement device a first analyte concentration reading and a second analyte concentration reading, both readings associated with a first event;

calculate a numerical delta between the first analyte concentration reading and the second analyte concentration reading for the first event with the hand-held device; and

display on the display via the GUI a time graph including a representation of the first event occurring and the numerical delta associated with the first event, wherein the numerical delta is displayed proximate to the representation of the occurrence of the first event to facilitate immediate visual evaluation of a relative magnitude of the numerical delta and an association with the first event, both indicating a significance of the first event.

2. The hand-held device of claim 1 , comprising a pocket personal computer (HPC), a personal digital assistant (PDA), a smart cellular phone, or a portable computer.

3. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the measurement device comprises a blood glucose meter (BGM), a continuous glucose meter (CGM), or a pump/CGM combination.

4. The hand-held device of claim 1 , further comprising a wireless connection capability or a USB (universal serial bus) connection capability to the measurement device.

5. The hand-held device of claim 1 , further comprising a port for receiving a memory article having the first analyte concentration reading or the second analyte concentration reading stored thereon.

6. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the processor executing the software is further operable to display on the display via the GUI an insulin dose associated with the first event proximate to the representation of the occurrence of the first event along with the numerical delta.

7. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the processor executing the software is further operable to:

determine if the numerical delta is within a predetermined acceptable range; and

indicate within the GUI that the numerical delta is within the predetermined acceptable range with a first indicator.

8. The hand-held device of claim 7 , wherein the first indicator comprises a first displayed color or a first displayed graphic.

9. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the processor executing the software is further operable to provide an indicia in the GUI associated with the first event, the indicia designating the first event as unacceptable if a magnitude of the numerical delta exceeds a predetermined threshold value wherein the indicia includes at least one of a display color and a graphic.

10. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the first event is a meal event, the first analyte concentration reading is a preprandial glucose concentration reading, and the second analyte concentration reading is a postprandial glucose concentration reading.

11. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the first event is an exercise regimen.

12. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the GUI is operable to display on the display the first analyte concentration reading and the second analyte concentration reading on a first axis against time on a second axis, and the numerical delta is displayed adjacent to a peak in the time graph of analyte concentration levels over time.

13. The hand-held device of claim 1 , wherein the processor executing the software is further operable to normalize the numerical delta as against another measure associated with the first event.

14. A hand-held analyte meter for identifying and displaying event readings, the hand-held analyte meter comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor;

software stored in the memory and executable by the processor; and

a display coupled to the processor and operable to present a graphical user interface (GUI), wherein the processor executing the software is operable to:

measure a first analyte concentration reading from a first sensor coupled to the hand-held analyte meter and a second analyte concentration reading from a second sensor coupled to the hand-held analyte meter, both readings associated with a first event;

calculate a numerical delta between the first analyte concentration reading and the second analyte concentration reading for the first event; and

display on the display via the GUI a time graph including a representation of the first event occurring and the numerical delta associated with the first event, wherein the numerical delta is displayed proximate to the representation of the occurrence of the first event to facilitate immediate visual evaluation of a relative magnitude of the numerical delta and an association with the first event, both indicating a significance of the first event.

15. The hand-held analyte meter of claim 14 , comprising a blood glucose meter (BGM), a continuous glucose meter (CGM), or a pump/CGM combination.

16. The hand-held analyte meter of claim 14 , wherein the processor executing the software is further operable to display on the display via the GUI an insulin dose associated with the first event proximate to the representation of the occurrence of the first event along with the numerical delta.

17. A hand-held device for identifying and displaying event readings, the hand-held device comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor;

software stored in the memory and executable by the processor; and

a display coupled to the processor and operable to present a graphical user interface (GUI), wherein the processor executing the software is operable to:

receive at the hand-held device a first analyte concentration reading from an analyte meter and a second analyte concentration reading from an analyte meter, both readings associated with a first event;

receive at the hand-held device a calculated numerical delta between the first analyte reading and the second analyte reading for the first event; and
