Abstract

Bioactive porous bone graft implants in various forms suitable for use in bone tissue regeneration and/or repair, as well as methods of use are provided. The implants are formed of bioactive glass and have an engineered porosity. The implants may be contained in polymer for enhanced clinical results and better handling.

Claims (21)

1. A porous, composite bone graft implant, comprising:

a first component comprising a bioactive glass material in the form of a plurality of porous fibrous clusters, each cluster comprising a matrix of randomly oriented bioactive glass fibers and first bioactive glass granules, and each cluster including a bioactive glass shell at least partially encasing each cluster, wherein the size of each cluster is about 0.75 mm to about 4 mm;

a second component comprising a plurality of second bioactive glass granules, wherein the size of each second bioactive glass granule is about 50 μm to about 450 μm; and

a third component comprising a collagen material for incorporation with the first and second components;

each of the components having a different resorption rate than the other component;

wherein the composite implant comprises a pore size distribution including pores characterized by pore diameters ranging from about 100 nanometer to about 1 millimeter, and wherein the composite implant is pliable.

2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass material is selected from the group consisting of sol gel derived bioactive glass, melt derived bioactive glass, silica based bioactive glass, silica free bioactive glass, phosphate based bioactive glass, crystallized bioactive glass, and bioactive glass containing trace elements.

3. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass material comprises a partially crystallized or fully crystallized bioactive glass.

4. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the collagen material is selected from the group consisting of a human-derived collagen, animal-derived collagen, and combination of both.

5. The implant of claim 4 , wherein the collagen material is fully or partially soluble.

6. The implant of claim 4 , wherein the collagen material comprises fibrous collagen.

7. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the collagen material is porous.

8. The implant of claim 1 , further including a calcium salt selected from the group consisting of tricalcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, and calcium sulfate.

9. The implant of claim 1 , further including a trace element.

10. The implant of claim 1 , further being in the form of a conformable putty.

11. The implant of claim 1 , further being in the form of a conformable foam.

12. The implant of claim 1 , further being in the form of a strip.

13. The implant of claim 1 , further being injectable into a target site.

14. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass shell is partially or fully sintered.

15. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the bioactive glass shell is porous.

16. The implant of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the plurality of fibrous clusters are partially or fully sintered.
