Abstract

In some implementations, data from security monitoring devices of a facility is collected and analyzed within the facility and the results of the analysis transmitted to another computer that is outside of the facility via a non-VPN communication path.

Claims (38)

1. A sentry device for monitoring devices for a facility, the sentry device comprising:

a processor;

a first communication port that is operably coupled to the processor and operable to establish a first communication path to a first external device, the first external device being external to the sentry device, the first external device being physically located in the facility, the first communication path not being a virtual private network, and the first communication path operable to communicate status data of the first external device;

a second communication port that is operably coupled to the processor and operable to establish a second communication path to a second external device, the second external device being external to the sentry device, the second communication path not being a virtual private network; and

computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor, comprising computer-executable instructions operable to:

receive first status data of the first external device;

perform security monitoring functions on the first status data, yielding security monitoring results;

transmit the security monitoring results through the second communication path; and

perform remediation functions on the first external device without intervention by another entity, thereby yielding remediation results.

2. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the security monitoring functions further comprise Simple Network Management Protocol security monitoring functions.

3. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the first external device further comprises a security monitoring device.

4. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the second external device further comprises a server.

5. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor further comprises computer-executable instructions operable to transmit encoded data through the second communication path.

6. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor further comprises computer-executable instructions operable to transmit HTTPS data through the second communication path.

7. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the first communication path does not comprise a computer firewall.

8. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the second communication path comprises a computer firewall.

9. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the second external device is physically located outside the facility.

10. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor does not comprise computer-executable instructions operable to transmit first status data through the second communication path.

11. The sentry device of claim 1 wherein the computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor further comprises computer-executable instructions operable to transmit the remediation results through the second communication path.

12. A system for monitoring devices for a facility, the system comprising:

a second external device; and

a sentry device, comprising,

a processor;

a first communication port that is operably coupled to the processor and operable to establish a first communication path to a first external device physically located in the facility, the first external device being external to the sentry device, the first communication path not being a virtual private network, and the first communication path operable to communicate status data of the first external device;

a second communication port that is operably coupled to the processor and operable to establish a second communication path to the second external device, the second external device being external to the sentry device, the second communication path not being a virtual private network;

computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor, comprising computer-executable instructions operable to:

receive first status data of the first external device;

perform security monitoring functions on the first status data, yielding security monitoring results;

transmit the security monitoring results through the second communication path; and

perform remediation functions on the first external device without intervention by another entity, thereby yielding remediation results.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein a firewall is interposed between the sentry device and the second external device.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the second communication path comprises a computer firewall.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the security monitoring functions further comprise Simple Network Management Protocol security monitoring functions.

16. The system of claim 12 wherein the first external device further comprises a security monitoring device.

17. The system of claim 12 wherein the second external device further comprises a server.

18. The system of claim 12 wherein the second external device is physically located outside the facility.

19. The system of claim 12 wherein the computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor does not comprise computer-executable instructions operable to transmit first status data through the second communication path.

20. The system of claim 12 wherein the computer-readable media operably coupled to the processor further comprises computer-executable instructions operable to transmit the remediation results through the second communication path.
