Abstract

Variable planform shelving systems include a variable support platform and a support surface assembly that is supported by the variable support platform. The variable support platform includes frames that can be repositioned relative to each other to vary the planform of the variable support platform. The support surface assembly provides a support surface for supported items. The support surface assembly is flexible and/or comprised of a plurality of linked panels so that the support surface provided varies in response to variation in the planform of the variable support platform.

Claims (24)

1. A shelving system comprising:

a shelf comprising a plurality of frames slidingly and pivotally coupled with one another for varying a length and a curvature of an edge of the shelf;

a first support column supporting the shelf and coupled with a first portion of the shelf;

a second support column supporting the shelf, the second support column coupled with a second portion of the shelf and the second support column being movable relative to the first support column within a variable distance that is variable in response to varying the length and the curvature of the edge of the shelf from the frames pivoting and sliding relative to one another;

a first backing panel coupled with the first support column;

a second backing panel coupled with the second support column, the second backing panel overlapping with the first backing panel by an amount variable according to the variable distance between the first support column and the second support column; and

a retainer releasably securing the first backing panel with the second backing panel in a locked configuration that resists or inhibits movement that would otherwise change the amount of overlapping of the first backing panel with the second backing panel.

2. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the retainer comprises a magnet.

3. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the retainer comprises:

a first strip having a first magnetic polarity; and

a second strip having a second magnetic polarity opposite the first magnetic polarity, the first backing panel and the second backing panel being disposed between the first strip and the second strips whereby the first backing panel and the second backing panel are held together in the locked configuration by at least forces resulting from attraction of the first magnetic polarity of the first strip with the opposite, second magnetic polarity of the second strip.

4. The shelving system of claim 3 , wherein the first strip of the retainer is hingedly attached to the second strip of the retainer.

5. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the first backing panel and the second backing panel are sized to fill a space extending between the first support column and the second support column at any position of the second support column relative to the first support column within the variable distance between the second support column and the first support column.

6. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the shelf is aligned along a first plane, and wherein the first backing panel is aligned along a second plane perpendicular to the first plane.

7. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the first backing panel is formed of a plastic material.

8. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the retainer comprises a fastener.

9. The shelving system of claim 1 , further comprising a first support beam and a second support beam, wherein the first support beam extends in a nonparallel direction from the first support column and engages the first portion of the shelf such that the first support column supports the shelf via the first support beam, and wherein the second support beam extends in a non-parallel direction from the second support column and engages the second portion of the shelf such that the second support column supports the shelf via the second support beam.

10. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of frames of the shelf comprises at least three frames slidingly and pivotally coupled with one another for varying the length and the curvature of the edge of the shelf.

11. The shelving system of claim 1 , wherein the shelf comprises an upper shelf comprising an upper first lateral frame, an upper central frame, and an upper second lateral frame, wherein the upper first lateral frame and the upper second lateral frame are each slidingly and pivotally coupled with the upper central frame for varying length and curvature of the edge of the upper shelf;

wherein the shelving system further comprises:

a third support column supporting the upper shelf, coupled with a third portion of the upper shelf, and movable relative to the second support column in response to varying the length and the curvature of the edge of the upper shelf;

a lower shelf comprising a lower first lateral frame, a lower central frame, and a lower second lateral frame, wherein the lower first lateral frame and the lower second lateral frame are each slidingly and pivotally coupled with the lower central frame for varying length and curvature of an edge of the lower shelf, wherein the first support column, the second support column, and the third support column are each coupled with the lower shelf so as to be movable in response to varying length and curvature of the lower shelf;

a second pair of backing panels overlapping one another between the second support column and the third support column; and

a second retainer releasably securing the second pair of backing panels together in a second locked configuration that resists or inhibits movement therefrom.
