Abstract

A cooler access control system locks a cooler when occurrence of an event is detected that requires limiting access to the inside of the cooler. Examples of such events include the loss of power to the cooler for a predetermined period of time, the opening of the cooler door for longer than an allowed time, the loss of functionality of a temperature probe and others. In an embodiment, a service mode is supported wherein the door is left unlocked despite the occurrence of such an event, to allow a stocker or other personnel to leave the cooler door open while stocking the cooler with product.

Claims (34)

1. A food storage vending cooler access control system for locking a refrigerated food storage vending cooler or freezer having a food storage vending cooler body and a food storage vending cooler door operatively connected to the cooler body, the food storage vending cooler body having walls forming a refrigerated food storage vending area defined by a perimeter of the walls of the food storage vending cooler body and the food storage vending cooler door when closed to the food storage vending cooler body, wherein the refrigerated food storage vending cooler or freezer includes a single air conditioning unit for providing refrigerated air at or below 42 degrees F. consistent throughout the refrigerated food storage vending area, wherein the refrigerated food storage vending area is adapted to store a plurality of food products which present a risk of spoiling when exposed to an air temperature above 42 degrees F., and wherein when the food storage vending cooler door is closed to the food storage vending cooler body the plurality of food products in the refrigerated food storage vending area is conditioned by the refrigerated air provided throughout the refrigerated food storage vending area, the system comprising:

a locking element being on a first one of the food storage vending cooler body and the food storage vending cooler door;

a locking mechanism mounted to a second one of the food storage vending cooler body and the food storage vending cooler door and configured to selectively engage the locking element to lock and unlock the food storage vending cooler door to the food storage vending cooler body;

at least one controller configured to detect an event resulting in a change in temperature of the food storage vending cooler or freezer, wherein the event presents a risk of spoilage of one or more food products in the refrigerated food storage vending area, and, in response, to lock the food storage vending cooler door to the food storage vending cooler body, wherein locking occurs after the temperature level of the refrigerated food storage vending area has exceeded 42 degrees F. for a time period of one or more minutes; and

wherein the at least one controller comprises a first microcomputer and a second microcomputer operatively connected;

wherein the locking mechanism remains in an unlocked position and the refrigerated food storage vending area remains freely accessible when the temperature of the refrigerated food storage vending area is rapidly changing at temperatures above 42 degrees F.

2. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a network for communicating a message over the network for monitoring the internal temperature of the food storage vending cooler or for controlling the locking mechanism or for communicating a parameter of the food storage vending cooler.

3. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising a secured unlocking implement independent from the at least one controller to selectively unlock the locking mechanism.

4. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputer is additionally operatively connected to a key sensor.

5. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and the second microcomputers receives a signal for unlocking the locking mechanism.

6. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a switch for detecting a reset signal.

7. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a temperature probe.

8. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a lock actuator.

9. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a light controller.

10. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a keypad.

11. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a latch position sensor.

12. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a door sensor.

13. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 12 , wherein the at least one controller detects when the food storage vending cooler door is open.

14. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is additionally operatively connected to a clock.

15. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is powered by a first AC power source for powering the system during normal operation, and a second power source comprising a battery for providing power to the system allowing the system to continue to function during a power failure.

16. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is powered by a first AC power source for powering the system during normal operation, and the other of the first and second microcomputers is powered by a second power source comprising a battery for providing power to the system allowing the system to continue to function during a power failure.

17. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first and second microcomputers are operatively connected by a reset signal communication line.

18. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first and second microcomputers are operatively connected by a lock control signal communication line.

19. The food storage vending cooler access control system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second microcomputers is operatively connected to a payment authorization device.
