Abstract

Systems and methods are described using a Hermetic Transform, as well as related transforms, for applications such as directional reception and/or transmit of signals using phased-array devices and systems. The systems and methods an include identifying a direction of arrival for a mobile communicating device. The systems and methods also include the use of a noise conditioning matrix.

Claims (19)

1. A system comprising:

a plurality of N elements for receiving signals;

analog to digital circuitry for processing the received signals to produce digital signals;

a processor for processing the digital signals by multiplying the digital signals by a noise conditioning matrix, and performing a Hermetic Transform on noise conditional data, wherein the noise conditioning matrix is derived from a covariance of internal noise.

2. The system of claim 1 , the processor further for determining one or more angles of arrival of the received signals based on the noise conditioned and transformed data.

3. The system of claim 1 , the processor further for performing a power spectral density from a beam time-series.

4. The system of claim 1 , the processor further for time averaging the square of the magnitude of the transformed data.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the processor, prior to the noise conditioning, deriving a covariance matrix of the digital signals.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the elements are antennas for receiving cellular communication signals, and the received signals include inphase and quadrature data.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the system is used with a cellular communication base station to determine the direction of arrival or one or more mobile units.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the elements are antennas for receiving communication signals from mobile devices, and wherein the received signals include inphase and quadrature data.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the processor for processing the data by multiplying by a covariance matrix and reshaping the output of the covariance matrix prior to the noise conditioning.

10. A method comprising:

receiving a plurality of wireless analog signals;

processing the received analog signals to produce digital signals;

processing the digital signals by multiplying the digital signals by a noise conditioning matrix, wherein the noise conditioning matrix is derived from a covariance of internal noise; and performing a Hermetic Transform on the noise conditional data.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of signals are received at a plurality of antennas, the method further comprising determining one or more angles of arrival of the received signals based on the noise conditioned and transformed data.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the analog signal are received from a base station by a mobile unit.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the analog signal are received from at a base station from a mobile unit.
