Abstract

A rotary element is equipped with a pattern representing a reflected binary code on at least three bits. A detection circuit is configured to sense the pattern and deliver an incident signal encoded in reflected binary code on at least three bits. The incident signal is converted by a transcoding circuit into an intermediate signal encoded in reflected binary code on two bits. A decoding stage decodes the intermediate signal and outputs at least one clock signal representing the amount of rotation of the rotary element and a direction signal representing the direction of rotation. A processing circuit determines the movement of the rotary element, and has at least one general purpose timer designed to receive the at least one clock signal and direction signal.

Claims (36)

1. A method, comprising:

converting the incident signal into an intermediate signal encoded in reflected binary code on two bits;

decoding the intermediate signal to generate at least one clock signal representing an amount of rotation and a direction signal representing a direction of rotation; and

processing the at least one clock signal and direction signal to generate information concerning rotation of the rotary element.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one clock signal comprises a first clock signal representing the amount of rotation of the rotary element in a first direction of rotation and a second clock signal representing the amount of rotation of the rotary element in a second direction of rotation.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising generating an error signal in response to detection of a prohibited transition between two values of the reflected binary code.

4. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising generating an error signal in response to detection of any one of the prohibited states of the reflected binary code.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the rotary element is a part of a gas or water meter.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the rotating pattern is an optical pattern.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the rotating pattern is a magnetic pattern.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the binary code on at least three bits is a Gray code and the binary code on two bits is also a Gray code.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein processing comprises asynchronously timing the at least one clock signal.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein processing comprises synchronously timing the at least one clock signal.

11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising gating the at least one clock signal to generate a synchronized clock signal, and wherein processing comprises timing the synchronized clock signal.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein gating comprises passing the intermediate signal for decoding in response to a control clock.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein synchronously timing comprises timing in response a logic invert of the control clock.

14. A method, comprising:

detecting a pattern on a moving element, said pattern representing a reflected binary code on at least three bits, wherein said reflected binary code on at least three bits comprises one or more prohibited states;

generating an incident signal from said detected pattern, said incident signal encoded in reflected binary code on at least three bits;

converting the incident signal into an intermediate signal encoded in reflected binary code on two bits;

decoding the intermediate signal to generate at least one clock signal representing an amount of movement and a direction signal representing a direction of movement; and

processing the at least one clock signal and direction signal to generate information concerning movement of the moving element.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the at least one clock signal comprises a first clock signal representing the amount of movement of the moving element in a first direction of movement and a second clock signal representing the amount of movement of the rotary element in a second direction of movement.

16. The method according to claim 14 , further comprising generating an error signal in response to detection of a prohibited transition between two values of the reflected binary code.

17. The method according to claim 14 further comprising generating an error signal in response to detection of any one of the prohibited states of the reflected binary code.
