Abstract

A personal mobility vehicle or scooter includes a least one swivel caster wheel supported at the rear of the scooter. The scooter has a body that includes a deck and a handlebar assembly. The scooter includes at least one front wheel with the deck extending between the at least one front wheel and the at least one swivel wheel. The scooter can also include an angled rear portion supporting a rear swivel caster wheel such that the pivot axis of the swivel wheel is inclined with respect to the top surface of the deck. Embodiments of the scooter also include a swivel braking assembly configured to apply a braking force to the at least one swivel wheel.

Claims (33)

1. A personal mobility vehicle comprising:

a handlebar assembly;

a front wheel connected to the handlebar assembly, the front wheel being steerable by the handlebar assembly, the front wheel having a neutral position in which the front wheel is aligned with a longitudinal axis extending longitudinally through the deck;

a rear swivel wheel assembly comprising a rear wheel pivotable about a swivel axis and rotatable about a rear wheel axis, the rear wheel having a neutral position aligned with the longitudinal axis;

a deck comprising a forward portion, a rearward portion, and a top surface that is configured to support a user, the rearward portion comprising a tail that extends upward and rearward at an angle relative to the top surface of the deck, wherein the rear swivel wheel assembly is connected to the tail, the swivel axis of the rear swivel wheel being inclined with respect to the top surface of the deck; and

wherein a rear end of the rear wheel extends rearward of a rear end of the tail such that the rear end of the rear wheel protrudes rearwardly out from under the tail.

2. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the front wheel and the rear wheel each have an outer diameter and the outer diameter of the front wheel is larger than the outer diameter of the rear wheel.

3. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the forward portion of the deck has a substantially constant thickness along the longitudinal axis.

4. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the angle between the tail and the longitudinal axis corresponding to the top surface of the deck is greater than 10 degrees and less than 30 degrees.

The personal mobility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the front wheel includes a front biasing member configured to rotationally bias the front wheel toward the neutral position of the front wheel and the rear swivel wheel assembly includes a rear biasing member configured to bias the rear wheel toward the neutral position of the rear wheel.

6. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the personal mobility vehicle comprises a kick scooter.

7. A personal mobility vehicle comprising:

a body comprising a deck and a handlebar assembly, the deck having a substantially constant thickness along a longitudinal axis extending longitudinally through the deck and having a top surface configured to support a user, the handlebar assembly being rotatable relative to the deck;

a front wheel supported by the handlebar assembly and pivotable relative to the deck, the front wheel being steerable by the handlebar assembly and the front wheel having a front neutral position in which it points forward and is aligned with the longitudinal axis;

a rear portion supported by the body, the rear portion having at least an inclined portion that is inclined with respect to the top surface of the deck, wherein the inclined portion comprises a tail that extends upward and rearward at an angle relative to the top surface of the deck; and

a rear swivel wheel assembly connected to the tail, the rear swivel wheel assembly comprising a rear wheel pivotable about a swivel axis and rotatable about a rear wheel axis, the rear wheel having a neutral position aligned with the longitudinal axis.

8. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 7 , wherein a rear end of the rear wheel extends rearward of a rear end of the tail such that the rear end of the rear wheel protrudes rearwardly out from under the tail.

9. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the front wheel and the rear wheel each have an outer diameter and the outer diameter of the front wheel is larger than the outer diameter of the rear wheel.

10. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the angle between the tail and the longitudinal axis corresponding to the top surface of the deck is greater than 10 degrees and less than 30 degrees.

The personal mobility vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the front wheel includes a front biasing member configured to rotationally bias the front wheel toward the neutral position of the front wheel and the rear swivel wheel assembly includes a rear biasing member configured to bias the rear wheel toward the neutral position of the rear wheel.

12. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the personal mobility vehicle comprises a kick scooter.

13. A kick scooter comprising:

a body comprising a deck and a handlebar assembly, the deck having a top surface configured to support a user and a bottom surface, the handlebar assembly being rotatable relative to the deck;

a rear portion supported by the body;

a rear swivel wheel assembly comprising a rear wheel pivotable about a swivel axis and rotatable about a rear wheel axis, the rear wheel having a neutral position aligned with a longitudinal axis extending longitudinally through the deck, wherein at least a portion of the rear wheel is disposed above the bottom surface of the deck; and

a front swivel wheel assembly supported by the handlebar assembly, the front swivel wheel assembly comprising a front wheel pivotable about a front swivel axis and rotatable about a front wheel axis, the front wheel having a front neutral position in which the front wheel points forward and is aligned with the longitudinal axis;

wherein the rear portion has at least an inclined portion that is inclined with respect to the top surface of the deck, wherein the inclined portion comprises a tail that extends upward and rearward at an angle relative to the top surface of the deck, wherein the swivel axis is inclined with respect to the top surface of the deck.

14. The kick scooter of claim 13 , wherein a rear end of the rear wheel extends rearward of a rear end of the tail such that the rear end of the rear wheel protrudes rearwardly out from under the tail.

15. The kick scooter of claim 13 , wherein the front wheel and the rear wheel each have an outer diameter and the outer diameter of the front wheel is larger than the outer diameter of the rear wheel.

16. The kick scooter of claim 13 , wherein the deck has a substantially constant thickness along the longitudinal axis.

17. The kick scooter of claim 13 , wherein the rear swivel wheel assembly is connected to the tail.

18. The kick scooter of claim 13 , wherein the front wheel includes a front biasing member configured to rotationally bias the front wheel toward the front neutral position and the rear swivel wheel assembly includes a rear biasing member configured to bias the rear wheel toward the neutral position of the rear wheel.

19. The personal mobility vehicle of claim 1 , wherein a horizontal longitudinal line drawn from the top surface of the deck does not intersect the rear wheel, but a horizontal longitudinal line drawn from a bottom surface of the deck does intersect the rear wheel.
