Abstract

Virtual video editing is disclosed. In some embodiments, a definition of a virtual clip of a source file is received from a user and saved for future playback of the virtual clip. The virtual clip is not encoded as a separate file. Rather, a portion of the source file specified in the definition of the virtual clip is played back when the virtual clip is played.

Claims (52)

1. A method for providing data over a network from a server, said method comprising:

storing, at the server, a definition of a video source file provided from a first client, the definition of the video source file including a client-defined start time and a client-defined stop time within the video source file;

receiving, at the server, a request for the video source file from the first client or a second client, wherein the request includes the definition, and the request is embedded in a URL; and

providing, with the server, data comprising a portion of the video source file over the network to the first client or the second client that requested the video source file without providing data comprising the entire video source file, wherein:

the client-defined stop time is not an end of the entire video source file,

the data comprising the portion of the video source file provided is automatically stopped at the client defined stop time, and

the data comprising the portion of the video source file is generated and provided by the server without the server re-encoding the portion of the video source file as a separate video file from the entire video source file,

wherein the data comprising the portion of the video source file comprises a virtual clip generated without creating a video file separate from the video source file, without modifying the video source file, and without storing a video file separate from the video source file.

2. The method recited in claim 1 , further comprising playing back the provided portion of the video source file at a media player.

3. The method recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second request from the client, said second request is for a portion of a second video source file to be included in the virtual clip, and

providing a composite of the portion of the video source file and the portion of the second video source file as the virtual clip.

4. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein:

the request is initially received from a user interface of a media player,

the request is requested by the media player from an associated server, and

the method further comprises:

receiving the provided data comprising the portion of the video source file at the media player; and

playing back the provided the portion of the video source file at the media player.

5. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein:

the request is received at an associated server that hosts the video source file, and

the data comprising the portion of the video source file is provided by the server to the first client or the second client that requested the video source file.

6. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein:

the receiving further comprises receiving a plurality of requests for portions of one or more video source files; and

the providing further comprises providing the data comprising the portions of the one or more video source files.

7. The method recited in claim 6 , further comprising receiving a request of an order of the portions of the one or more video source files.

8. The method recited in claim 6 , further comprising receiving a request of one or more transitions between the portions of the one or more video source files.

9. The method recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a request of one or more users with which to share the data comprising the portion of the video source file; and

providing to the one or more users a second URL to access the data comprising the portion of the video source file from an associated server.

10. A system for providing data over a network from a server, the system comprising:

a processor and a memory storing program instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

store, at the server, a definition of a video source file provided from a first client, the definition of the video source file including a client-defined start point time and a client-defined stop time within the video source file;

receive, at a server, a request for the video source file from the first client or a second client, wherein the request includes the definition, and the request is embedded in a URL; and

provide, using the server, data comprising a portion of the video source file via a network to the first client or the second client that requested the video source file without transferring the entire video source file to the client, wherein:

the client-defined stop time is not an end of the entire video source file,

the data comprising the portion of the video source file provided is automatically stopped at the client-defined stop time, and

the data comprising the portion of the video source file is generated and provided by the server without the server re-encoding the portion of the video source file as a separate video file from the entire video source file,

wherein the data comprising the portion of the video source file comprises a virtual clip generated without creating a video file separate from the video source file, without modifying the video source file, and without storing a video file separate from the video source file.

11. The system recited in claim 10 , wherein the system further comprises an associated server that hosts the video source file.

12. The system recited in claim 10 , wherein the request is initially received via a user interface associated with a media player.

13. The system recited in claim 10 , wherein:

the program instructions further configure the system to receive a second request for a portion of a second video source file to be included in the virtual clip and the provided data comprising the portion of the video source file further comprises the portion of the second video source file.

14. The system recited in claim 10 , wherein:

the program instructions further configure the system to receive a plurality of requests of one or more video source files, and

the provided data further comprises the one or more video source files.

15. The system recited in claim 10 , wherein the program instructions further configure the system to:

receive a request of one or more users with which to share the data comprising the portion of the video source file; and

provide to the one or more users a second URL to access the data comprising the portion of the video source file from an associated server.

16. The method recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

providing, using the server, the entire video source file to the first client in response to a request from the first client.

17. The system recited in claim 10 , wherein the program instructions further cause the system to:

provide, using the server, the entire video source file to the first client in response to a request from the first client.
