Abstract

A method for retrofitting a preexisting wall to include bullet resistance. The retrofitted wall incorporates ballistic paver blocks that are capable of augmenting either an interior or exterior wall. The flexibility gained by using ballistic paver blocks affords cost and weight savings over traditional concrete, or alternatively, metal shielding.

Claims (34)

1. A method of retrofitting a preexisting wall for bullet resistance comprising the steps of:

acquiring ballistic paver blocks;

selecting a preexisting wall to be augmented;

selecting a side of the preexisting wall to be augmented;

applying a first row of the ballistic paver blocks in a first layer;

applying subsequent rows of the ballistic paver blocks in the first layer;

applying at least two subsequent layers of the ballistic paver blocks;

wherein the at least two subsequent layers of the ballistic paver blocks are configured to provide no non-pinpoint seam overlap between and among the first layer and the at least two subsequent layers; and

wherein the ballistic paver blocks are formed from wet ballistic concrete prepared without an addition of a preformed foam.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ballistic paver blocks are made of ballistic concrete containing no foaming agent nor foam stabilizing agent.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ballistic paver blocks are bevel jointed at the vertical edges to provide no pinpoint seam overlap between and among the first layer and the at least two subsequent layers.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adhering the first row of the ballistic paver blocks in the first layer to the preexisting wall and/or adhering the subsequent rows of the ballistic paver blocks in the first layer to the preexisting wall.

5. A bullet resistant wall system comprising:

ballistic paver blocks;

wherein the ballistic paver blocks are constructed, configured, and arranged to form a wall having at least two adjacent individual layers;

wherein the blocks have beveled, juxtaposed vertical edges; and the at least two adjacent individual layers are configured to provide no alignment of abutting edges between the at least two adjacent individual layers;

wherein each of the at least two adjacent individual layers includes multiple adjacent rows of the ballistic paver blocks; and

wherein the ballistic paver blocks are formed from wet ballistic concrete prepared without an addition of a preformed foam.

6. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 5 , wherein the ballistic paver blocks are made of ballistic concrete containing no foaming agent nor stabilizing agent.

7. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 5 , further comprising an aesthetic wall face.

8. A bullet resistant wall system comprising:

at least three layers of blocks, wherein at least two of the at least three layers comprise ballistic paver blocks, and wherein the at least three layers of blocks are configured to provide no non-pinpoint seam overlap between the at least three layers of blocks, and wherein the ballistic paver blocks are formed from wet ballistic concrete prepared without an addition of a preformed foam.

9. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , further comprising an aesthetic wall face.

10. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , wherein the ballistic paver blocks are made of ballistic concrete containing no foaming agent nor stabilizing agent.

11. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , wherein the ballistic paver blocks are bevel jointed at the vertical edges to provide no pinpoint seam overlap between layers.

12. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , wherein the bullet resistant wall abuts a preexisting interior or exterior wall.

13. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 12 , wherein the bullet resistant wall is adhered to the preexisting interior or exterior wall.

14. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 12 , wherein the bullet resistant wall extends from a floor to a predetermined height that is less than the height of the preexisting wall.

15. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 12 , wherein the vertical edges of the ballistic paver blocks are beveled to eliminate orthogonal penetration of a bullet at seams of the ballistic paver blocks.

16. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , wherein the at least three layers of blocks consist of three layers of blocks, and wherein each layer of blocks of the three layers of blocks is between two and four inches thick.

17. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , wherein vertical edges of each layer of blocks are staggered by a minimum of at least two inches horizontally.

18. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , wherein the at least three layers of blocks are all ballistic paver blocks.

19. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 18 , wherein the at least three layers of ballistic paver blocks have no other materials between any layer of the at least three layers of ballistic paver blocks.

20. The bullet resistant wall system of claim 8 , wherein horizontal edges of each layer of blocks are staggered by a minimum of at least two inches vertically.
