Abstract

A method of producing a vacuum insulated glazing (VIG) unit comprising providing substantially parallel glass panes, a plurality of pillars, and a peripheral seal between the glass panes; providing an evacuation hole in a first glass pane for evacuating a void to a reduced pressure; covering the evacuation hole with an evacuation head comprising a heating element, the evacuation head having substantially hermetic contact to the first glass pane; arranging the glass panes, the plurality of pillars, the peripheral seal, and the evacuation head in an oven; heating the oven according to a predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 and compensating for a difference in temperature between the temperatures T 1 and a temperature T 2 under the evacuation head by activating the heating element to increase the temperature T 2 to equal the temperature T 1 ; evacuating the void through the evacuation head after completion of the heating; and sealing the evacuation hole.

Claims (48)

1. A method of producing a vacuum insulated glazing (VIG) unit, the method comprising:

providing first and second substantially parallel glass panes, a plurality of pillars, and a peripheral seal between the first and second glass panes;

arranging the glass panes, the plurality of pillars, the peripheral seal, and the evacuation head in an oven, wherein the oven is configured for heating according to a predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 ;

heating the oven according to the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 and compensating for a difference in temperature between the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 and a temperature T 2 under the evacuation head by activating the heating element for a time sufficient to increase the temperature T 2 to equal the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 ;

evacuating the void through the evacuation head after completion of the heating according to the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 ; and

sealing an evacuation tube tip of an evacuation tube disposed in the evacuation hole.

2. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein the heating element is activated according to the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 .

3. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , further comprising

monitoring the temperature T 2 under the evacuation head; and

heating the evacuation head by activating the heating element when the temperature T 2 is less than the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 .

4. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein the heating element is a ceramic heating element.

5. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , further comprising displacing the heating element using an actuator to contact the evacuation tube tip of the evacuation tube.

6. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein the evacuating of the void is at a temperature of 150° C. or greater.

7. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , further comprising independently heating the heating element to a first temperature and heating the heating element to a second temperature while the oven is heating according to the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 .

8. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 7 , wherein the first temperature is substantially equal to a soldering temperature of the peripheral seal, and wherein the second temperature is substantially equal to a sealing temperature of the evacuation tube tip.

9. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , further comprising heating the heating element to the temperature T 2 to equal the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 to provide a uniform VIG body temperature beneath the evacuation head, and heating the heating element to a second temperature to seal the evacuation tube tip.

10. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein the evacuation head further comprises a second heating element.

11. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein the evacuation head further comprises fins to enhance thermal conduction between oven air surrounding the evacuation head and the evacuation head.

12. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein a contact width of the evacuation head to the surface of the first glass pane is less than 50 mm.

13. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein the evacuation tube comprises a solder glass ring that is arranged around the evacuation hole or an evacuation port.

14. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein the evacuation tube is an evacuation cap comprising an evacuation port and a solder glass ring arranged around the evacuation port.

15. The method of producing the VIG unit according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second glass panes is a tempered glass pane.

16. A vacuum insulated glazing (VIG) unit manufacture facility comprising an oven with a compartment configured for heating a VIG unit according to a predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 ,

wherein the oven comprises an evacuation head in fluid communication with at least one vacuum pump, and

wherein the evacuation head comprises

a temperature sensor for determining a temperature T 2 under the evacuation head; and

a heating element configured to heat the evacuation head when the temperature sensor determines that the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 is greater than the temperature T 2 for a time sufficient for the temperature T 2 to become substantially equal to the predetermined profile of oven temperatures T 1 .

17. The VIG unit manufacture facility according to claim 16 , wherein the heating element is a ceramic heating element.

18. The VIG unit manufacture facility according to claim 16 , wherein the heating element is configured to contact an evacuation tube tip.
