Abstract

The present invention discloses a method for controlling surface-inhabiting pests in an aquatic system, in particular cyanobacteria and harmful algal blooms (HABs), comprising spreading on the surface of the aquatic system a buoyant composition comprising a water disinfectant, preferably an oxidizing compound, and a floating agent. The invention further relates to compositions and methods for their preparation and use.

Claims (24)

1. A method for targeting cyanobacteria, algae and/or phytoplankton in an aquatic system, the method comprising:

applying a buoyant composition comprising at least one solid floating agent and at least one cyanobacteria, algae and/or plankton inhibitor to a surface of an aquatic system in a vicinity of a cyanobacteria, algae and/or plankton bloom such that a concentration of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is between about 0.5 to about 10 ppm in said aquatic system,

wherein said buoyant composition moves together with said bloom in said aquatic system,

wherein said floating agent is selected from the group consisting of saturated hydrocarbons, wax, natural or synthetic latex and combinations thereof,

wherein the photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is selected from the group of hypochlorite (OCl), calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite, sodium dichloroisocyanurate, copper sulfate, hydrogen peroxide, sodium per-carbonate, calcium peroxide, solidified hydrogen peroxide-PVP complexes, sodium per-borate, peracetic acid and combinations thereof, and

wherein the aquatic system is selected from lakes, rivers, fountains, ponds, canals, aquaculture systems, water holding or conveying systems, water reservoirs, open drinking water systems, brackish water environments, wastewater and oceans.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein at least a 50% reduction in said photosynthetic microorganism is achieved within a period of time of one day or less and after said period of time, a pH of said aquatic system is reduced and a concentration at said surface of chlorophyll a is reduced by at least 50%, and wherein said concentration of said at least one of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is less than 3 ppm after said period of time.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said period of time is three hours.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein said concentration of said at least one of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is less than 0.3 ppm after said period of time.

5. The method according to claim 2 , wherein after said period of time a concentration of chlorophyll a at a depth of 50 cm below said surface is reduced by at least 50%.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said composition is configured for slow release of said microorganism inhibitor.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a concentration of said at least one of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is between 0.005 g/m 2 and about 50 g/m 2 of said surface area of said aquatic system.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one photosynthetic microorganism is selected from the group consisting of a cyanobacterium, an alga, a plankton and combinations thereof.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein said photosynthetic microorganism is a cyanobacterium.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said aquatic system has a surface area of at least 1 km 2 .

11. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising measuring said concentration of said at least one of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor after said applying step.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein said concentration of said at least one of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is undetectable three hours after said applying step.

13. A buoyant slow-release composition for targeting a cyanobacteria, algae and/or phytoplankton in an aquatic system, the composition comprising:

at least one solid floating agent and at least one cyanobacteria, algae and/or phytoplankton inhibitor,

wherein said solid floating agent is selected from the group consisting of saturated hydrocarbons, wax, natural or synthetic latex and combinations thereof, wherein the cyanobacteria, algae and/or phytoplankton inhibitor is selected from the group of hypochlorite (OCl), calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite, sodium dichloroisocyanurate, copper sulfate, hydrogen peroxide, sodium per-carbonate, calcium peroxide, solidified hydrogen peroxide-PVP complexes, sodium per-borate, peracetic acid and combinations thereof,

wherein said buoyant composition moves together with said bloom when applied in said aquatic system, and

wherein the aquatic system is selected from lakes, rivers, fountains, ponds, canals, aquaculture systems, water holding or conveying systems, water reservoirs, open drinking water systems, brackish water environments, wastewater and oceans.

14. The composition according to claim 13 , wherein a concentration of said at least one of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is between 0.005 g/m 2 and about 50 g/m 2 of said surface area of said aquatic system.

15. The composition of claim 13 , wherein a concentration of said photosynthetic microorganism inhibitor is between about 0.5 to about 10 ppm in said aquatic system.
