Abstract

Described herein are compositions and methods for the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction. Said compositions and methods comprise keratolytic agents, such as salicylic acid, selenium disulfide, or the like. Topical administration of said compositions to the eyelid margin or surrounding areas provides therapeutic benefit to patients suffering from meibomian gland dysfunction.

Claims (30)

1. A method for treating meibomian gland dysfunction in a patient in need thereof, comprising topical administration of a composition comprising at least one local anesthetic, wherein the composition is administered in an amount sufficient to treat meibomian gland dysfunction without a need for further probing of a meibomian gland of the patient.

2. A method for treating meibomian gland dysfunction in a patient in need thereof, comprising topical administration of a composition consisting essentially of at least one local anesthetic, wherein the composition is administered in an amount sufficient to treat meibomian gland dysfunction without a need for further probing of a meibomian gland of the patient.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises an aminoamide local anesthetic or an aminoester local anesthetic.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the local anesthetic is an aminoamide selected from the group consisting of articaine, bupivacaine, cinchocaine, dibucaine, etidocaine, levobupivacaine, lidocaine, lignocaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine, ropivacaine, and trimecaine.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the local anesthetic is an aminoester selected from the group consisting of benzocaine, chloroprocaine, cocaine, cyclomethycaine, dimethocaine, larocaine, piperocaine, propoxycaine, procaine, novocaine, proparacaine, tetracaine, and amethocaine.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one local anesthetic comprises a combination of lidocaine and prilocaine.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one local anesthetic comprises a combination of lidocaine and tetracaine.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the local anesthetic is a naturally derived local anesthetic selected from the group consisting of saxitoxin, neosaxitoxin, tetrodotoxin, menthol, eugenol, and cocaine.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a vasoconstrictor.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition comprises prilocaine and epinephrine.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition comprises lidocaine, bupivacaine and epinephrine.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition comprises lidocaine, iontocaine and epinephrine.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition comprises septocaine, articaine and epinephrine.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a steroid.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is an ointment, a cream, a gel, or a lotion.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a solution, a suspension, or an emulsion.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises nanoparticles, microparticles, or liposomes.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising placement of a protective barrier over the eye prior to administration of the composition.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises more than 4% lidocaine.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises about 23% lidocaine.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises about 7% tetracaine.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises about 23% lidocaine and about 7% tetracaine.

23. The method of claim 15 , wherein the composition comprises more than 4% lidocaine.

24. The method of claim 15 , wherein the composition comprises about 23% lidocaine.

25. The method of claim 15 , wherein the composition comprises about 7% tetracaine.

26. The method of claim 15 , wherein the composition comprises about 23% lidocaine and about 7% tetracaine.

27. The method of claim 1 , wherein meibomian gland dysfunction is treated without further probing of a meibomian gland of the patient.

28. The method of claim 2 , wherein meibomian gland dysfunction is treated without the further probing of a meibomian gland of the patient.

29. A method for treating meibomian gland dysfunction in a patient in need thereof, comprising topical administration of a composition comprising at least one local anesthetic, wherein the composition is administered in an amount sufficient to treat meibomian gland dysfunction without a need for further mechanical intervention.

30. The method of claim 29 , wherein meibomian gland dysfunction is treated without the further mechanical intervention.
