Abstract

Described are apparatus and methods that automatically generate recommendations to growers. Using various different sets of data relative to a predetermined tract of agricultural land, typically including both imagery as well as electrical usage, they are processed together to make informed decisions regarding the state of the land, particularly with respect to water usage.

Claims (36)

1. A method of irrigating a plant in a determined area of land that is serviced by providing water thereto using an electrical pump, the method comprising:

inputting, into a memory of a computer system that includes a processor, layout data representing a planting layout of multiple plants in the determined area of land, and a photograph of the determined area of land;

inputting, into the memory of a computer system that includes the processor, local energy data corresponding to energy usage of the electrical pump;

determining, based upon software automatically executed by the processor, in combination with the layout data, the photograph and the local energy data, a health metric that is indicative of a health of a plant of the multiple plants; and

irrigating the plant using the electrical pump in accordance with the determined health metric.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the health metric includes:

determining the health metric further based on one or more of soil data of the determined area of land, crop type of the plant, a normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI) of the plant, weather data associated with the determined area of land, pump data of the electrical pump.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

obtaining training data, which includes one or more of soil data of an area of land, weather data associated with the area of land, pump data of the electrical pump, NDVI of the plants in the area of land, or reference health metric of plants in the area of land, and

training a machine learning model using the training data to predict the health metric of the plant.

4. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

comparing value of the determined health metric against a threshold health metric; and

transmitting an alert if the determined health metric is lower than the threshold health metric.

5. The method according to claim 4 further comprising:

providing, based upon software automatically executed by the processor, in combination with the layout data, the photograph and the local energy data, additional geo-referenced location for which there exists at least one cause of a stressed plant or a set of stressed plants due to (a) a clog or leakage in any component of the irrigation system; (b) a soil erosion issue; (c) an infestation of insects and/or fungus; (d) non-optimal sensor placements; and (e) malfunction of any component of the irrigation system.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the health metric of the plant further comprises:

determining, based upon software automatically executed by the processor, in combination with the layout data and crop type data of the plants, health metric of a group of plants in the determined area of land, wherein the group of plants include plants of a specific crop type, plants in a specific portion of the determined area of land, or the plants in the determined area of land, and

irrigating the group of plants based on the health metric of a group of plants.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining health metric of the multiple plants, and

providing, based upon the health metric of the multiple plants, data associated with dead plants.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining health metric of the multiple plants, and

adjusting, based upon the health metric of the multiple plants, the irrigation data to control the time of harvest of one or more the multiple plants.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein inputting the layout data and the photograph of the determined area of land further includes:

processing the photograph in combination with the layout data and a reference image of the determined area of land to generate a geo-registered image of the determined area of land, wherein the geo-registered image indicates each plant of the multiple plants.

10. A method of providing a farming prescription for a determined area of land that is serviced by providing water thereto using an irrigation system that includes an electrical pump, the method comprising the steps of:

inputting, into a memory of a computer system that includes a processor, at least one photograph of the determined area of land and layout data representing a planting layout of multiple plants in the determined area of land;

inputting, into the memory of a computer system that includes the processor, local energy data corresponding to energy usage of the electrical pump;

prescribing, based upon software automatically executed by the processor, in combination with the layout data, the photograph and the local energy data, additional information about a plant of the multiple plants in the determined area of land, wherein the irrigation system is equipped to apply chemicals to the plant, and, sensors are placed in the determined area of land; and

using the additional information to perform at least one of (a) updating amount of nutrients including amount of any N, P and K, where N is Nitrogen, P is Phosphorus and K is Potassium, to a geo-referenced location associated with the plant, (b) updating sensor placements within the determined area of land, and (c) applying pesticide to counter infestation of insects and/or fungus for the plant.

11. A computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by a processor, performs a method of irrigating a plant in a determined area of land that is serviced by providing water thereto using an electrical pump, the method comprising:

inputting, into a memory of a computer system that includes a processor, layout data representing a planting layout of multiple plants in the determined area of land, and a photograph of the determined area of land;

inputting, into the memory of a computer system that includes the processor, local energy data corresponding to energy usage of the electrical pump;

determining, based upon software automatically executed by the processor, in combination with the layout data, the photograph and the local energy data, a health metric that is indicative of a health of a plant of the multiple plants; and

irrigating the plant using the electrical pump in accordance with the determined health metric.
