Abstract

An apparatus for addressing a plurality of Internet of Things (IoT) devices includes storage to store instructions and a processor. The processor is to execute the stored instructions to initialize an IoT device alias addressing space, to assign an alias address to each of a plurality of the IoT devices, where the alias addresses are time-limited, and to handle packet transactions using the assigned alias addresses.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to execute the stored instructions to:

rank the alias addresses based on activity levels of corresponding IoT devices; and

assign the alias addresses based on the rank of the alias addresses.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to execute the stored instructions to:

identify a new IoT device for which an alias address has not been assigned;

assign an alias address to the new IoT device; and

re-assign an alias address to each of the plurality of IoT devices.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to execute the stored instructions to:

identify when a time limitation of one or more of the assigned alias addresses has expired; and

re-assign alias addresses in response to the identification that time limitation of one or more of the assigned alias addresses has expired.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to execute the stored instructions to:

initialize the IoT device alias addressing space based on a maximum expected number of IoT devices over a given time interval.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to execute the stored instructions to:

assign the length of the alias addresses based on the maximum number of IoT devices.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an alias address is assigned based on a performance of the IoT device.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an alias address is assigned based on a behavior of the IoT device.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an alias address is assigned based on an activity level of the IoT device.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein an alias address is assigned based on a priority of the IoT device.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to execute the stored instructions to:

rank the alias addresses; and

assign the alias addresses based on the rank of the alias addresses.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the IoT device alias addressing space is a time-limited reusable address space that is leased until an expiration time.

15. A method of addressing a plurality of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, comprising:

initializing an IoT device alias addressing space;

assigning an alias address to each of a plurality of the IoT devices, where the alias addresses are time-limited, and where a length of the alias addresses is based on a maximum number of IoT devices; and

handling packet transactions using the assigned alias addresses.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising:

ranking the alias addresses based on performance metrics of corresponding IoT devices; and

assigning the alias addresses based on the ranking of the alias addresses.

17. The method of claim 15 , comprising:

ranking the alias addresses based on behavior characteristics of corresponding IoT devices; and

assigning the alias addresses based on the rank of the alias addresses.

18. The method of claim 15 , comprising:

ranking the alias addresses based on activity levels of corresponding IoT devices; and

assigning the alias addresses based on the rank of the alias addresses.

19. The method of claim 15 , comprising:

identifying a new IoT device for which an alias address has not been assigned;

assigning an alias address to the new IoT device; and

re-assigning an alias address to each of the plurality of IoT devices.

20. The method of claim 15 , comprising:

identifying when a time limitation of one or more of the assigned alias addresses has expired; and

re-assigning alias addresses in response to the identifying that the time limitation of one or more of the assigned alias addresses has expired.

21. The method of claim 15 , comprising:

assigning the length of the alias addresses based on the maximum number of IoT devices.

22. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed, direct a processor to:

initialize an IoT device alias addressing space;

assign an alias address to each of a plurality of the IoT devices, where the alias addresses are time-limited, and where a length of the alias addresses is based on a maximum number of IoT devices; and

handle packet transactions using the assigned alias addresses.

23. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 22 , comprising instructions that, when executed, direct a processor to:

rank the alias addresses based on performance metrics of corresponding IoT devices; and

assign the alias addresses based on the ranking of the alias addresses.

24. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 22 , comprising instructions that, when executed, direct a processor to:

rank the alias addresses based on behavior characteristics of corresponding IoT devices; and
