Abstract

A perforating apparatus includes a longitudinal cylinder axis about which a cylinder rotates. At least one shaped anvil is disposed on the cylinder. Further, a support operatively engages with the cylinder, and the support is moveable with respect to the cylinder. A blade is disposed on the support so as to cooperate in contacting relationship with the anvil, and the blade is substantially parallel to the longitudinal cylinder axis. At least one of the blade and the anvil comprises a plurality of teeth, and adjacent teeth are separated by a recessed portion. A web is perforated as the web passes between the rotating cylinder and the support and the blade cooperates with the anvil.

Claims (25)

1. A perforating apparatus and a web, the web comprising:

bath tissue or tissue towel having a machine direction, and a cross machine direction that is perpendicular to the machine direction; and

the apparatus comprising:

a cylinder comprising a longitudinal cylinder axis and at least one anvil having a profile of a sinusoidal shape, wherein the cylinder rotates about the longitudinal cylinder axis;

a support operatively engaged with the cylinder, wherein the support is moveable with respect to the cylinder; and

a blade disposed on the support so as to cooperate in contacting relationship with the anvil, wherein the blade is parallel to the longitudinal cylinder axis,

wherein the blade comprises a plurality of teeth, and wherein adjacent teeth are separated by a recessed portion,

wherein the web is perforated as the web passes between the rotating cylinder and the support and the blade cooperates with the anvil, the perforating forming a curvilinear line of weakness in the web comprising at least two wavelengths, wherein the curvilinear line of weakness comprises a plurality of perforations, wherein each of the plurality of perforations is separated by a bond area, wherein each of the plurality of perforations has a perforation length and each bond area has a non-perforation length, wherein each of the wavelengths comprises a crest and a trough, wherein the non-perforation lengths are substantially the same length at the crests and the troughs of the wavelengths and a different length between the crests and the troughs of the wavelengths;

wherein the cylinder and the support are at an angle of 2 degrees to 20 degrees from the cross machine direction of the web; and

wherein the anvil is mechanically and removably attached to an outer surface of the cylinder by bolting, clamping, or screwing.

2. The perforating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blade is disposed in a blade holder, and wherein the blade holder is disposed on the support.

3. The perforating apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an interaction point, wherein the interaction point is from 0.0001 inches to 0.01 inches.

4. The perforating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cylinder has a diameter of 5 inches to 20 inches and a length of 10 inches to 150 inches.

5. The perforating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one or more anvils are disposed radially about an outer surface of the cylinder.

6. The perforating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of teeth has a tooth length, and wherein at least two teeth have different tooth lengths.

7. The perforating apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the anvil is smooth-edged.

8. A perforating apparatus and a web, the web comprising:

bath tissue or tissue towel having a machine direction, and a cross machine direction that is perpendicular to the machine direction; and

the apparatus comprising:

a cylinder comprising a longitudinal cylinder axis and at least one shaped blade having a profile of a sinusoidal shape, wherein the cylinder rotates about the longitudinal cylinder axis;

a moveable support operatively engaged with the cylinder; and

an anvil disposed on the support so as to cooperate in contacting relationship with the shaped blade;

wherein the shaped blade comprises a plurality of teeth, and wherein adjacent teeth are separated by a recessed portion,

wherein the web is perforated as the web is passed between the cylinder and the support and the anvil disposed on the support cooperates in contacting relationship with the shaped blade disposed on the rotating cylinder, the perforating forming a curvilinear line of weakness in the web comprising at least two wavelengths, wherein the curvilinear line of weakness comprises a plurality of perforations, wherein each of the plurality of perforations is separated by a bond area, wherein each of the plurality of perforations has a perforation length and each bond area has a non-perforation length, wherein each of the wavelengths comprises a crest and a trough, wherein the non-perforation lengths are substantially the same length at the crests and the troughs of the wavelengths and a different length between the crests and the troughs of the wavelengths; and

wherein the cylinder and the support are at an angle of 2 degrees to 20 degrees from the cross machine direction of the web.
