Abstract

A handheld skin monitoring or measuring device includes a camera having a camera optical axis; and a structured light arrangement configured to project three or more laser fan beams such that the laser fan beams cross at a crossing point in front of the camera.

Claims (30)

1. A handheld skin monitoring or measuring device for monitoring a feature on a skin surface including:

a housing shaped and dimensioned to be held in a single hand of a user;

a camera mounted in the housing and having a lens;

a structured light arrangement attached to the housing and configured to project structured light on the skin surface in front of the lens; and

a communications link configured to transmit image data captured by the camera;

wherein the structured light produces a visual pattern on the skin surface which indicates a field of view of the camera to the user without requiring reference to a display screen.

2. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 1 wherein the structured light produces depth data in said image data characterizing a depth of the feature.

3. The handheld monitoring or measuring device of claim 1 wherein the visual pattern forms a predetermined visible shape on the skin surface only when the lens is within an optimum distance range from the skin surface whereby the user may position the device within the optimum distance range without reference to a display screen.

4. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 3 wherein the structured light arrangement projects a first visible shape if the camera is closer than the optimum distance range from the skin surface, and a second visible shape if the camera is farther than the optimum distance range from the skin surface, the first and second shapes being different than the predetermined visible shape.

5. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 4 wherein the first shape is different than the second shape.

6. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 3 wherein the visual pattern comprises the predetermined visible shape.

7. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 6 wherein the predetermined visible shape comprises a star.

8. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 1 , including a capture button positioned on the housing such that when said housing is held by said single hand the capture button is accessible to one of the user's fingers or thumb on said single hand.

9. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 1 wherein said housing has a spherical portion shaped to be held by said single hand.

10. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 1 wherein said structured light arrangement projects visible light.

11. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 1 wherein said structured light arrangement projects a plurality of laser beams.

12. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 11 wherein said laser beams comprise laser fan beams.

13. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 12 wherein the structured light arrangement projects at least three laser fan beams and the predetermined shape comprises a star shape formed by an intersection of said three laser fan beams.

14. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 12 wherein the laser fan beams subtend angles corresponding to the camera field of view.

15. The handheld skin monitoring or measuring device of claim 12 wherein the laser fan beams projected onto the skin surface define a region corresponding to an image frame of the camera.

16. A method of monitoring a feature on a skin surface using a handheld skin monitoring or measuring device, the method comprising:

projecting structured light onto the skin surface to produce a visual pattern on the skin surface, wherein the visual pattern indicates a field of view of a camera of the device; and

guiding a user to position the device within an optimum distance range relative to the skin surface based on the visual pattern, wherein the visual pattern forms a predetermined visible shape on the skin surface only when the camera is within an optimum distance range from the skin surface such that the user may position the device within the optimum distance range without reference to a display screen.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising capturing image data with the camera when the device is within the optimum distance range.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising communicating the captured image data to a computer external from the device.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein the image data includes one or more images of the skin surface with the visual pattern projected thereon.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the structured light produces depth data in the image data characterizing a depth of the feature.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the image data is captured in response to a single actuation of a button of the device by the user.

22. The method of claim 16 wherein the predetermined visible shape is a star.

23. The method of claim 16 wherein projecting the structured light includes projecting at least three laser fan beams, wherein the laser fan beams subtend angles corresponding to the field of view of the camera, and wherein the visual pattern defines a region corresponding to an image frame of the camera.
