Abstract

A dual-aperture zoom digital camera operable in both still and video modes. The camera includes Wide and Tele imaging sections with respective lens/sensor combinations and image signal processors and a camera controller operatively coupled to the Wide and Tele imaging sections. The Wide and Tele imaging sections provide respective image data. The controller is configured to combine in still mode at least some of the Wide and Tele image data to provide a fused output image from a particular point of view, and to provide without fusion continuous zoom video mode output images, each output image having a given output resolution, wherein the video mode output images are provided with a smooth transition when switching between a lower zoom factor (ZF) value and a higher ZF value or vice versa, and wherein at the lower ZF the output resolution is determined by the Wide sensor while at the higher ZF value the output resolution is determined by the Tele sensor.

Claims (25)

1. A dual-aperture camera, comprising:

a) a Wide camera comprising a Wide lens and a Wide image sensor, the Wide camera having a respective field of view FOV W and being operative to output Wide image data;

b) a Tele camera comprising a Tele lens and a Tele image sensor, the Tele camera having a respective field of view FOV T narrower than FOV W and being operative to output Tele image data, wherein the Tele lens has a respective effective focal length EFL T and a total track length TTL T fulfilling the condition EFL T /TTL T >1; and

c) a camera controller operatively coupled to the Wide and Tele cameras and configured, depending on a requested FOV, to switch an output stream of frames of the dual-aperture camera between an output stream of frames including Wide image data and an output stream of frames including Tele image data or vice versa, to operate the camera from which image data is used for the output stream of frames at a full frame rate, and to operate the camera that from which image data is not used for the output stream of frames at a frame rate that is lower than the full frame rate.

2. The dual-aperture camera of claim 1 , wherein the camera that outputs a stream of frames at full frame rate is the Tele camera.

3. The dual-aperture camera of claim 1 , wherein the camera that outputs a stream of frames at full frame rate is the Wide camera.

4. The camera of claim 1 , wherein when switching the output stream of frames of the dual-aperture camera between an output stream of frames including Wide image data and an output stream of frames including Tele image data or vice versa, the camera controller is further configured to reduce an image jump effect seen in the output stream of frames by matching scale between the Wide image data and the Tele image data.

5. The camera of claim 1 , wherein when switching the output stream of frames of the dual-aperture camera between an output stream of frames including Wide image data and an output stream of frames including Tele image data or vice versa, the camera controller is further configured to match brightness and color between the Wide image data and the Tele image data.

6. The camera of claim 1 , wherein each of the Wide image data and Tele image data has a respective output resolution, wherein at a zoom factor (ZF) lower than an up-transfer zoom ZF the output resolution is determined by the Wide sensor and wherein at a ZF higher the up-transfer ZF the output resolution is determined by the Tele sensor.

7. The camera of claim 6 , wherein the camera controller is further configured to use, at the higher ZF, secondary information from the Wide image data to reduce an image jump effect seen in the output stream of frames.

8. The camera of claim 6 , wherein the camera controller is further configured to use, at the lower ZF, secondary information from the Tele image data to reduce an image jump effect seen in the output stream of frames.

9. The camera of claim 1 , wherein the camera controller includes a user control module for receiving a user input and a sensor control module for configuring each sensor to acquire the Wide image data and the Tele image data based on the user input.

10. The camera of claim 9 , wherein the user input is selected from the group consisting of a camera mode input and a zoom factor input.

11. A method, comprising:

a) providing a dual-camera comprising a Wide camera that includes a Wide lens and a Wide image sensor, the Wide camera having a respective field of view FOV W and being operative to output Wide image data, and a Tele camera that includes a Tele lens and a Tele image sensor, the Tele camera having a respective field of view FOV T narrower than FOV and being operative to output Tele image data, wherein the Tele lens has a respective effective focal length EFL T and a total track length TTL T fulfilling the condition EFL T /TTL T >1; and, depending on a requested FOV,

c) configuring a camera controller operatively coupled to the Wide and Tele cameras to switch an output stream of frames of the dual-aperture camera between an output stream of frames including Wide image data and an output stream of frames including Tele image data or vice versa, to operate the camera from which image data is used for the output stream of frames at a full frame rate, and to operate the camera that from which image data is not used for the output stream of frames at a frame rate that is lower than the full frame rate.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the camera that outputs a stream of frames at full frame rate is the Tele camera.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the camera that outputs a stream of frames at full frame rate is the Wide camera.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the configuring the camera controller to switch an output stream of frames of the dual-aperture camera between an output stream of frames including Wide image data and an output stream of frames including Tele image data or vice versa includes configuring the camera controller to match scale between the Wide image data and the Tele image data to reduce an image jump effect seen in the output stream of frames.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the configuring the camera controller to switch an output stream of frames of the dual-aperture camera between an output stream of frames including Wide image data and an output stream of frames including Tele image data or vice versa includes configuring the camera controller to match brightness and color between the Wide image data and the Tele image data.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the Wide image data and Tele image data has a respective output resolution, wherein at a zoom factor (ZF) lower than an up-transfer zoom ZF the output resolution is determined by the Wide sensor and wherein at a ZF higher the up-transfer ZF the output resolution is determined by the Tele sensor.
