Abstract

A touch panel having a transparent capacitive sensing medium configured to detect multiple touches or near touches that occur at the same time and at distinct locations in the plane of the touch panel and to produce distinct signals representative of the location of the touches on the plane of the touch panel for each of the multiple touches is disclosed.

Claims (43)

1. A touch-sensitive display arrangement, comprising:

a display device;

a touch panel positioned adjacent to the display device, the touch panel including

a substrate having a front side capable of being touched and a back side,

a plurality of first traces of a first transparent conductive material, the plurality of first traces having first linewidths,

a plurality of second traces of a second transparent conductive material, the plurality of second traces having second linewidths wider than the first linewidths, and

an insulating layer positioned between the plurality of first traces and the plurality of second traces,

wherein the plurality of first traces, the plurality of second traces and the insulating layer are positioned on the back side of the substrate, and

wherein the plurality of first traces and the plurality of second traces are oriented to cross over each other at crossover locations separated by the insulating layer, the crossover locations forming mutual capacitance sensors for detecting one or more touches on the front side of the substrate; and

one or more sensor circuits operatively coupled to the plurality of first traces or the plurality of second traces for detecting a decrease in charge coupling between the plurality of first traces and the plurality of second traces.

2. The touch-sensitive display arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the touch panel is positioned over the display device to permit viewing of the display device through the touch panel.

3. The touch-sensitive display arrangement of claiml, wherein the plurality of first traces comprise drive lines patterned on the back side of the substrate.

4. The touch-sensitive display arrangement of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of second traces comprise sense lines.

5. The touch-sensitive display arrangement of claim 4 , wherein the insulating layer is positioned over the drive lines and the sense lines are positioned over the insulating layer.

6. The touch-sensitive display arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the number of the plurality of first traces is different than the number of the plurality of second traces.

7. A touch-sensitive display arrangement, comprising:

a display device;

a touch panel positioned adjacent to the display device, the touch panel including

a substrate having a front side capable of being touched and a back side, and

touch driving and touch sensing lines patterned on the back side of the substrate, the touch driving lines having a different width than the touch sensing lines,

wherein the touch driving and touch sensing lines are oriented to cross over each other at crossover locations forming mutual capacitance sensors for detecting one or more touches on the front side of the substrate, and

wherein the touch driving and touch sensing lines are made of a transparent conductive material; and

one or more sensor circuits operatively coupled to the touch sensing lines for detecting a decrease in charge coupling between the touch driving lines and the touch sensing lines.

8. The touch-sensitive display arrangement of claim 7 , wherein the touch panel is positioned over the display device to permit viewing of the display device through the touch panel.

9. A touch-sensitive display arrangement, comprising:

a display device; and

a touch panel distinct from but positioned adjacent to the display device, the touch panel including

a substrate having a front side capable of being touched and a back side,

a plurality of first traces of a first transparent conductive material, the plurality of first traces having first linewidths,

a plurality of second traces of a second transparent material, the plurality of second traces having second linewidths wider than the first linewidths, and

an insulating layer positioned between the plurality of first traces and the plurality of second traces,

wherein the plurality of first traces, the plurality of second traces and the insulating layer are positioned on the back side of the substrate, and

wherein the plurality of first traces and the plurality of second traces are oriented to cross over each other at crossover locations separated by the insulating layer, the crossover locations forming mutual capacitance sensors for detecting one or more touches on the front side of the substrate;

wherein the display device is capable of being viewed through the first transparent conductive material of the plurality of first traces and the second transparent conductive material of the plurality of second traces of the touch panel; and

wherein one or more sensor circuits are operatively coupled to the plurality of first traces or the plurality of second traces for detecting a decrease in charge coupling between the plurality of first traces and the plurality of second traces.

10. A method for detecting one or more touches over a display, comprising:

patterning touch driving lines and touch sensing lines of a transparent conductive material on a back side of a transparent substrate having a front side capable of being touched, such that the touch driving lines have a different width than the touch sensing lines;

orienting the touch driving lines and the touch sensing lines to cross over each other at crossover locations that form mutual capacitance sensors for detecting one or more touches on the front side of the substrate;

locating a display device on the back side of the substrate; and

detecting a decrease in charge coupling between the touch driving lines and the touch sensing lines when an object touches or is in proximity to the front side of the substrate.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising insulating the touch driving lines and the touch sensing lines.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the touch driving lines are wider than the touch sensing lines.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the touch sensing lines are formed closer to the substrate than the touch driving lines.
