Abstract

Systems, methods, and devices are provided for the treatment of edema. In one aspect a method for implanting an indwelling catheter within a vein of a patient is provided. The catheter can extend from a position upstream of at least one outflow port of a duct of the lymph system to a terminal position downstream of the at least one outflow port. In use, a first restriction can be created within the vein proximal to a distal region of the catheter. The first restriction can define a localized low pressure zone distal of the restriction and within a portion of the vein housing the catheter. The low pressure zone can be adjacent to the at least one outflow port to enable fluid to pass from the at least one lymph duct outflow port into the vein.

Claims (24)

1. A device comprising:

a catheter;

a first restrictor operably associated with the catheter, wherein the first restrictor comprises a retracted and deployed configuration and in the deployed configuration, the first restrictor comprises a diameter of a vein; and

one or more sensors positioned on the catheter and in operable communication with the first restrictor, the one or more sensors operable to provide data that is used to alter the diameter of the first restrictor inside the vein.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise pressure sensors.

3. The device of claim 2 , further comprising a control module for processing the data provided by the sensors, wherein the data relates to a detected change in blood pressure, and the control module processes the data to adjust a volume of the first restrictor in response to the detected change in blood pressure.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first restrictor comprises an expandable balloon.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the expandable balloon is associated with an outer wall of the catheter.

6. The device of claim 5 , further comprising an inflation lumen operably associated with the expandable balloon.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more sensors is distal to the first restrictor.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more sensors is spaced apart from the first restrictor.

9. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a pump.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the pump is disposed within the catheter.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the pump is configured to advance fluid from a proximal end of the catheter toward a distal end of the catheter, thereby advancing fluid within the vein.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the pump is an impeller.

13. The device of claim 11 , further comprising a second restrictor comprising a retracted and deployed configuration.

14. The device of claim 13 , further comprising a suction lumen in fluid communication with the pump, the suction lumen proximal of the first restrictor.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the suction lumen is between the first and second restrictors.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the pump is external to a patient and operably coupled to the suction lumen.

17. The device of claim 16 , further comprising a discharge lumen, wherein the discharge lumen is in fluid communication with the catheter.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein the discharge lumen comprises an outlet upstream of the second restrictor.

19. The device of claim 1 , wherein in a deployed configuration, the first restrictor creates a pressure change across the first restrictor.

20. The device of claim 1 , wherein in a deployed configuration, the first restrictor reduces blood pressure downstream of the first restrictor.

21. The device of claim 1 , wherein in a deployed configuration, the first restrictor controls blood flow in a jugular vein.
