Abstract

A print head comprising two shafts disposed in opposite sides of a filament to drive the filament to a heated chamber for delivering a molten material. The shafts are actively driven, for example, by two independent motors. The two shaft configuration of the print head can improve a control of the filament movement rate, especially for soft filament materials.

Claims (51)

1. A print head comprising

a conduit,

wherein the conduit comprises a channel for guiding a filament;

two motors,

wherein each motor comprises a shaft,

wherein the conduit comprises two cut portions for accepting the two shafts,

wherein each of the two cut portions expose a portion of the channel,

wherein the two shafts are configured to rotate in opposite directions for driving the filament along the channel;

a heated chamber,

wherein the heated chamber is coupled to the conduit for receiving the filament driven by the two shafts,

wherein the heated chamber is configured to deliver a molten material from the filament.

2. A print head as in claim 1

wherein the two shafts are disposed in parallel with each other and perpendicular to the conduit,

wherein the two shafts are configured to be in opposite sides of the filament and contacting the filament.

3. A print head as in claim 1

wherein at least one shaft of the two shafts contacts the filament through the exposed portion,

wherein the at least one shaft is hobbed at least in an area that the at least one shaft contacts the filament.

4. A print head as in claim 1

wherein the two shafts contacts the filament through the exposed portions,

wherein both shafts of the two shafts are hobbed at areas contacting the filament.

5. A print head as in claim 1

wherein a gear is coupled to at least one shaft of the two shaft,

wherein the gear contacts the filament through the exposed portion.

6. A print head as in claim 1

wherein the two motors are disposed in opposite directions with respect to the conduit.

7. A print head as in claim 1 further comprising

an assembly coupled to one shaft of the two shafts for pushing the one shaft to the other shaft of the two shafts.

8. A print head as in claim 1 further comprising

a spring assembly coupled to one shaft of the two shafts for adjusting a distance between the two shafts.

9. A print head as in claim 1 further comprising

an assembly coupled to one motor of the two motors for adjusting a distance between the two shafts.

10. A print head as in claim 1

wherein each motor is coupled to a motor mount,

wherein the print head further comprises an assembly coupled to one motor mount of the two motor mounts for adjusting a distance between the two shafts.

11. A print head as in claim 1

wherein each motor is coupled to a motor mount,

wherein the two motor mounts are coupled to each other so that one motor mount of the two motor mounts is configured to move with respect to the other motor mount,

wherein the print head further comprises an assembly coupled to one motor mount of the two motor mounts for adjusting a distance between the two shafts.

12. A print head as in claim 1

wherein the print head is configured to be coupled to a 3D printer.

13. A print head as in claim 1 further comprising

an acoustic sensor for detecting a condition of the two motors.

14. A print head as in claim 1 further comprising

an acoustic sensor for detecting a contact of the print head with an object.

15. A print head as in claim 1 further comprising

an acoustic sensor for leveling a platform.

16. A method comprising

activating two motors to rotate in opposite direction,

wherein each motor comprises a shaft,

wherein the two shafts are configured to drive a filament along a channel of a conduit to a heated chamber for delivering a molten material;

moving the two motors to print an object with the molten material.
