Abstract

A smart functional vehicle component includes a vehicle component, a leather sheet fixed over a surface of the vehicle component, a flexible electronic circuit contacting an A-surface of the leather sheet and including a printed and cured conductive ink, a light source that emits light when electrical power is supplied to the light source, the light source being electrically connected to the circuit, and a pigmented coating arranged over the electronic circuit and over the light source. The pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the circuit and the light source form being visible through the pigmented coating. Light emitted by the light source is visible through the pigmented coating. Light emitted by the light source provides visual indicators that convey information to a vehicle occupant.

Claims (52)

1. A functional layered assembly comprising:

a leather sheet including a first side and a second side opposite from the first side;

a flexible electronic circuit contacting the first side of the leather sheet and including a printed and cured conductive ink, and including a light source; and

a pigmented coating arranged over the electronic circuit.

2. The functional layered assembly according to claim 1 , wherein:

the pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the circuit, including the light source, from being visible through the pigmented coating; and

light emitted by the light source is visible through the pigmented coating.

3. The functional layered assembly according to claim 2 , wherein light emitted by the light source provides visual indicators.

4. The functional layered assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the visual indicators include warnings, notices, alerts, instructions, a current time, or combinations thereof.

5. The functional layered assembly according to claim 3 , wherein:

the circuit is in electrical communication with a human machine interface, and

the functional layered assembly is configured to provide the visual indicators in response to input to the human machine interface.

6. The functional layered assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the input includes audible input.

7. The functional layered assembly according to claim 1 , further including an acrylic urethane anti-soiling component over the first side of the leather sheet, wherein the anti-soiling component is included a) as part of the pigmented coating, or b) as a top coat over the pigmented coating.

8. The functional layered assembly according to claim 1 , further including a microcontroller electrically connected to the circuit, arranged at an edge of the leather sheet, and configured to control functions of the circuit.

9. The functional layered assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the circuit further includes a power source, a capacitor, an inductor, a diode, a resistor, a transformer, a switch, a sensor, a load, a fuse, an antenna, a wireless transmitter, a heater, or combinations thereof.

10. The functional layered assembly according to claim 1 , wherein

the circuit includes a pressure sensor; and

the pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the pressure sensor from being seen through the pigmented coating.

11. The functional layered assembly according to claim 1 , wherein:

the circuit includes a switch that is operable to make or break a conductive path in the circuit;

the pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the switch from being seen through the pigmented coating; and

light emitted by the light source indicates a location of the switch.

12. A system comprising:

a functional layered assembly including

a leather sheet including a first side and a second side opposite from the first side,

a flexible electronic circuit contacting the first side of the leather sheet, and including a printed and cured conductive ink, and including a light source, and

a pigmented coating arranged over the electronic circuit,

a microcontroller configured to control functions of the circuit; and

a power source electrically connected to the circuit through the microcontroller; and

wherein the light source emits light when supplied with power from the power source.

13. The system according to claim 12 , wherein:

the pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the circuit, including the light source, from being visible through the pigmented coating; and

light emitted by the light source is visible through the pigmented coating.

14. The system according to claim 13 , wherein light emitted by the light source provides visual indicators.

15. The system according to claim 14 the visual indicators include warnings, notices, alerts, instructions, a current time, or combinations thereof.

16. The system according to claim 14 , further including a human machine interface in communication with the circuit through the microcontroller, wherein the functional layered assembly is configured to provide the visual indicators in response to input to the human machine interface.

17. The system according to claim 12 , wherein:

the circuit includes a switch that is operable to make or break a conductive path in the circuit; and

light emitted by the light source indicates a location of the switch.

18. The system according to claim 12 , wherein:

the circuit includes a pressure sensor; and

the pigmented coating inhibits or prevents the pressure sensors from being visible through the pigmented coating.

19. A functional component comprising a substrate, and a functional layered assembly covering a surface of the substrate, the functional layered assembly including:

a leather sheet including a first side and a second side opposite from the first side, the leather sheet being arranged over the surface of the substrate such that a first side of the leather sheet is facing away from the substrate,

a flexible electronic circuit contacting the first side of the leather sheet; and

a pigmented coating arranged over the electronic circuit,

wherein the surface of the substrate is contoured; and

wherein the functional layered assembly, including the electronic circuit, conforms to the contours of the surface of the substrate.

20. A functional component according to claim 19 , wherein:

the electronic circuit includes a light source; and

light emitted by the light source is visible through the pigmented coating.
