Abstract

The present disclosure provides electroretinography devices configured to detect biopotential signals from an eye of a subject. In some embodiments, the device is configured to prevent the subject's eyelids from closing over the device when placed in contact with the anterior surface of the subject's eye. In some embodiments, the device has a Young's modulus of no more than about 50 MPa. In some embodiments, the device includes a diffusing or refracting element configured to scatter, focus or diverge incident light. In other embodiments, the device includes a void through which incident light can enter the subject's eye without passing through any portion of the device.

Claims (49)

1. An electroretinography device comprising:

an ocular portion configured to detect a single biopotential signal from an eye of a subject, the ocular portion consisting essentially of a biocompatible material having a Young's modulus of no more than about 50 MPa and including:

a proximal portion configured to be placed in contact with an anterior surface of the eye,

a distal portion including at least one side wall, and

a single conductive element housed in the ocular portion and directly carried by the biocompatible material of the ocular portion,

wherein the proximal portion includes a flange-shaped extension radially outward of the side wall of the distal portion and configured to enable an eyelid to slide over the extension;

a signal relay operatively connected to the conductive element and configured to transmit the biopotential signal from the conductive element to a signal processor; and

a protective shield covering a portion of the signal relay adjacent to the ocular portion.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ocular portion is configured to prevent eyelids of the subject from closing when the proximal portion is placed in contact with the anterior surface of the eye.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one side wall is configured to prevent the eyelids from closing.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the at least one side wall has a concave shape.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ocular portion further includes a second conductive element.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ocular portion further includes a lens.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ocular portion further includes a diffusing component.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion further includes a channel, and wherein the conductive element is housed at least partially within the channel.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive element is positioned to be in direct contact with the anterior surface of the eye.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive element is positioned to be in indirect contact with the anterior surface of the eye.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion includes a curved surface configured to provide positive, negative, or zero optical power to the subject.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion includes a first proximal surface having a first curvature and a second proximal surface having a second curvature different than the first curvature, wherein the second proximal surface is radially outward of the first proximal surface.

13. An electroretinography device comprising:

an ocular portion configured to detect a biopotential signal from an eye of a subject, the ocular portion including:

a proximal portion consisting essentially of a biocompatible material having a Young's modulus of no more than about 50 MPa and configured to be placed in contact with an anterior surface of the eye,

a distal portion including at least one side wall, and

a single circumferential conductive element housed in the ocular portion and directly carried by the biocompatible material of the proximal portion;

a signal relay operatively connected to the conductive element and configured to transmit the biopotential signal from the conductive element to a signal processor,

a protective shield covering a portion of the signal relay adjacent to the ocular portion, and

wherein the proximal portion and the distal portion include a void configured to allow incident light to enter the eye without passing through any portion of the electroretinography device.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the distal portion has a Young's modulus of no more than about 50 MPa.

15. An electroretinography device comprising:

an ocular portion configured to detect a single biopotential signal from an eye of a subject, the ocular portion including:

a proximal portion configured to be placed in contact with an anterior surface of the eye and having a channel or void within a biocompatible material having a Young's modulus of no more than about 50 MPa;

a distal portion including at least one side wall,

a single conductive element directly carried by the channel of the proximal portion;

a signal relay operatively connected to the conductive element and configured to transmit the biopotential signal from the conductive element to a signal processor;

a protective shield covering a portion of the signal relay adjacent to the ocular portion; and

an integral flange configured to enable eyelids of the subject to slide over the flange, wherein a proximal surface of the flange has a curvature that is complementary or substantially complementary to a curvature of at least a portion of a sclera of the eye.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the ocular portion is configured to prevent eyelids of the subject from closing when the proximal portion is placed in contact with the anterior surface of the eye.

17. The device of claim 15 , wherein the ocular portion further includes a diffusing component.

18. The device of claim 15 , wherein the distal portion includes a curved surface configured to provide positive, negative, or zero optical power to the subject.

19. An electroretinography system comprising:

an electroretinography device including:

an ocular portion configured to detect a single biopotential signal from an eye of a subject, the ocular portion including:

a proximal portion configured to be placed in contact with an anterior surface of the eye and having a channel or void within a biocompatible material having a Young's modulus of no more than about 50 MPa,

a distal portion including at least one side wall, a single conductive element directly carried by the channel of the proximal portion, and

a signal relay operatively connected to the conductive element and configured to transmit the biopotential signal from the conductive element to a signal processor;

a protective shield covering a portion of the signal relay adjacent to the ocular portion; and

a conductive fluid surrounding at least a portion of the single conductive element.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the electroretinography device further comprises:

an integral flange configured to enable an eyelid of the subject to slide over the flange, and wherein a proximal surface of the flange has a curvature that is complementary or substantially complementary to a curvature of at least a portion of a sclera of an eye.
