Abstract

A system and method for torrefying a combination of biomass and biochar colloidal dispersion is provided.

Claims (19)

1. A system for carbonizing a biomass, comprising:

a pump adapted to receive a blended feedstock of noncarbonized biomass and bio fuel, the bio fuel lubricating the bio mass;

a reactor configured to continuously receive the blended feedstock and to carbonize the uncarbonized biomass of the blended feedstock, the bio fuel of the blended feedstock also providing for enhanced transfer of heat to the uncarbonized biomass, wherein the reactor is a first pipe having a first diameter surrounded by a second pipe having a second diameter larger than the first diameter, the second pipe being supplied with a recycling molten salt stream, the length of the first pipe having an input end for receiving blended feedstock, and an output end for outputting the carbonized biomass.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein heat is provided to the reactor using a recycling molten salt stream, the molten salt having a first temperature.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the reactor outputs a continuous stream of a second blend containing carbonized biomass and bio fuel; and

further comprising a pyrolysis reactor configured to continuously receive the second blend and transform the carbonized biomass into a pyrolyzed product.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein heat is provided to the pyrolysis reactor using a second recycling molten salt stream, the molten stream having a second temperature.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the pyrolyzed product is a pyro oil.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the pyro oil is added to carbonized biomass and then polymerized to maintain the carbonized biomass in a desired form or shape.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blended feedstock includes feedstock derived from a plant shell.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein the pyro oil is added to the carbonized biomass, and the mixture of carbonized biomass and pyro oil is further processed to polymerized the mixture in a desired form or shape.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the desired form or shape includes a granule, crumb, small or large cube or ball, a tube or mini-tube, micro-tube, pellet, a briquette, a mini-briquette, or other large or small shape.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the carbonized biomass is a low moisture biocarbon.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outputted carbonized biomass comprises a blend of torrefied biomass and biocarbon colloidal dispersion generated within the length of the first pipe.

12. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second blend has a particle distribution in the range of 10 microns to 100 nanometers.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the particle distribution has an average particle size of 200 nanometers to 400 nanometers.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the torrefied biomass is friable.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feedstock of noncarbonized biomass includes waste from a process that produces a combustible liquid from raw biomass.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the blend of torrefied biomass and biocarbon colloidal dispersion is a includes a low moisture biocarbon, a condensable gas and a liquid component.
