Abstract

A privacy glazing structure may include an electrically controllable optically active material that provides controlled transition between a privacy or scattering state and a visible or transmittance state. To make electrical connections with electrode layers that control the optically active material, the privacy glazing structure may include electrode engagement regions. In some examples, the electrode engagement regions are formed as notches in peripheral edges of opposed panes bounding the optically active material. The notches may or may not overlap to provide a through conduit in the region of overlap for wiring. In either case, the notches may allow the remainder of the structure to have a flush edge surface for ease of downstream processing.

Claims (36)

1. A privacy glazing structure comprising:

a first pane of transparent material having an inner face and a peripheral edge;

a second pane of transparent material having an inner face and a peripheral edge;

a first electrode layer carried by the inner face of the first pane of transparent material, the first electrode layer including a first contact portion extending between the peripheral edge of the first pane of transparent material and a remainder of the first electrode layer but otherwise being offset from the peripheral edge of the first pane of transparent material about a perimeter of the first pane of transparent material;

a second electrode layer carried by the inner face of the second pane of transparent material, the second electrode layer including a second contact portion extending between the peripheral edge of the second pane of transparent material and a remainder of the second electrode layer but otherwise being offset from the peripheral edge of the second pane of transparent material about a perimeter of the second pane of transparent material;

an electrically controllable optically active material positioned between the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer;

a sealant extending around the perimeter of the first pane of transparent material and the second pane of transparent material and bonding the first pane of transparent material to the second pane of transparent material, the sealant being positioned in a region where the first electrode layer is offset from the peripheral edge of the first pane of transparent material and the second electrode layer is offset from the peripheral edge of the second pane of transparent material;

a first electrode engaged with the first contact portion of the first electrode layer; and

a second electrode engaged with the second contact portion of the second electrode layer.

2. The structure of claim 1 , wherein:

the first electrode layer if offset from the perimeter about the first pane of transparent material by at least one of grinding and laser ablating the first electrode layer a distance from the peripheral edge of the first pane, and

the second electrode layer if offset from the perimeter about the second pane of transparent material by at least one of grinding and laser ablating the second electrode layer a distance from the peripheral edge of the second pane.

3. The structure of claim 1 , wherein:

the first electrode layer is offset a distance ranging from 1 mm to 25 mm from the peripheral edge of the first pane, and

the second electrode layer is offset a distance ranging from 1 mm to 25 mm from the peripheral edge of the second pane.

4. The structure of claim 1 , wherein:

the first electrode layer is offset a distance ranging from 5 mm to 15 mm from the peripheral edge of the first pane, and

the second electrode layer is offset a distance ranging from 5 mm to 15 mm from the peripheral edge of the second pane.

5. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first contact portion and second contact portion each define a polygonal shape.

6. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first contact portion and second contact portion each define a rectangular shape.

7. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first contact portion and second contact portion each have a size greater than 5 square millimeters.

8. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first contact portion and second contact portion each have a size ranging from 5 square millimeters to 1000 square millimeters.

9. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first pane and the second pane are each fabricated from float glass.

10. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first pane and the second pane each have a thickness ranging from 2 mm to 6 mm.

11. The structure of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first pane and the second pane is a laminated pane comprising two panes of glass bonded together with a polymer.

12. The structure of claim 11 , wherein both of the first pane and the second pane are laminated glass panes.

13. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the sealant comprises a polymeric material.

14. The structure of claim 1 , further comprising a first wire, a second wire, and a driver, wherein the first electrode is electrically connected to the driver via the first wire, and the second electrode is electrically connected to the driver via the second wire.

15. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first pane defines a first notch providing access to the first contact portion of the first electrode layer, and the second pane defines a second notch providing access to the second contact portion of the second electrode layer.

16. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the electrically controllable optically active material is a liquid crystal material having a light transmittance that varies in response to application of an electrical field.

17. The structure of claim 1 , further comprising:

a third pane of transparent material generally parallel to the first pane of transparent material and the second pane of transparent material, and

a spacer positioned between the third pane of transparent material and the first pane of transparent material to define a between-pane space, the spacer sealing the between-pane space from gas exchange with a surrounding environment and holding the first pane of transparent material a separation distance from the third pane of transparent material.

18. The structure of claim 17 , wherein the between-pane space is filled with an insulative gas.

19. The structure of claim 1 , further comprising a frame surrounding the structure.

20. The structure of claim 19 , wherein the frame configures the structure as a window.
