Abstract

A split radio access network is provided that efficiently transmits beamforming coefficients from a distributed baseband unit device to a remote radio unit device to facilitate beamforming at the remote radio unit. The beamforming coefficients can be determined at the baseband unit device and transmitted along with the IQ data (data to be beamformed) to the remote radio unit device. Due to the large number of antenna ports however, there can still be a very large number of coefficients to transmit, and the disclosure provides for a compressed set of coefficients that reduces the overhead signaling requirements. Instead of sending coefficients for every k th antenna port, the system can select a subset of the coefficients corresponding to a set of k antenna ports which can be used by the remote radio unit to approximate the full set of beamforming coefficients.

Claims (28)

transmitting the defined number of portions of the respective subgroups of beamforming coefficients to a remote radio unit device to facilitate digital beamforming of a transmission to occur at the remote radio unit device.

2. The baseband unit device of claim 1 , wherein the portions of the respective subgroups of beamforming coefficients correspond to different combinations of a specified number of subgroups of beamforming coefficients.

3. The baseband unit device of claim 1 , wherein the threshold spectral efficiency is based on a function comprising a singular value decomposition of a channel matrix.

4. The baseband unit device of claim 1 , wherein the selecting the defined number of portions of the respective subgroups of beamforming coefficients comprises selecting a subgroup of beamforming coefficients based on a criterion associated with coefficient magnitude.

5. The baseband unit device of claim 1 , wherein the defined number of portions is inversely proportional to a number of layers of transmission from the baseband unit device.

6. The baseband unit device of claim 1 , wherein the respective basis vectors are common to the baseband unit device and the remote radio unit device.

7. The baseband unit device of claim 1 , wherein the respective basis vectors are determined based on information associated with a transmission of a codeword to the remote radio unit device.

8. A method, comprising:

selecting, by a baseband unit device comprising a processor, a defined number of portions of respective subgroups of beamforming coefficients having spectral efficiencies that satisfy a threshold spectral efficiency, wherein the respective subgroups of beamforming coefficients correspond to respective basis vectors; and

transmitting, by the baseband unit device, the defined number of portions of the respective subgroups of beamforming coefficients to a remote radio unit device to facilitate digital beamforming of a transmission to occur at the remote radio unit device.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the portions of the respective subgroups of beamforming coefficients correspond to different combinations of a particular number of subgroups of beamforming coefficients.
