Abstract

Systems and methods for measuring short wave infrared fluorescence and autofluorescent signals are disclosed.

Claims (29)

1. A system comprising:

an excitation source that emits electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths between or equal to 300 nm and 900 nm;

a detector that detects fluorescence emitted from a fluorescent probe, wherein the detector detects electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between or equal to 900 nm and 2000 nm; and

a processor configured to determine a state of imaged tissue using a detected signal corresponding to a portion of a tail of a fluorescence spectrum of the fluorescent probe, wherein the fluorescence spectrum includes a fluorescence peak between or equal to 400 nm and 900 nm, and wherein the portion of the tail has a wavelength between or equal to 900 nm and 2000 nm.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detector outputs a detected fluorescence signal from the fluorescent probe to the processor.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor compares the detected fluorescence signal to an intensity threshold to determine a tissue state.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the tissue state is cancerous.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a display, wherein the detector outputs a detected fluorescence signal from the fluorescent probe to the display.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescence peak is greater than or equal to 600 nm.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the excitation source emits electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths greater than or equal to 600 nm.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescent probe comprises at least one of indocyanine green, Fluorescein, methylene blue, cyanine5, cyanine5.5, cyanine7, cyanine7.5, silicon rhodamine, 5-ALA, IRDye 700, IRDye 800CW, IRDye 800RS, E350, squarylium dye, phthalocyanine, porphyrin derivative, and borondipyrromethane.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detector detects electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range between or equal to 1400 nm and 1500 nm.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the fluorescent probe.

11. A method comprising:

exposing a portion of tissue including a fluorescent probe to an excitation source of the fluorescent probe, wherein the fluorescent probe has a fluorescence spectrum including a peak between or equal to 400 nm and 900 nm and a portion of a tail of the fluorescence spectrum has a wavelength between or equal to 900 nm and 2000 nm;

imaging the tissue with a detector that is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between or equal to 900 nm and 2000 nm; and

determining a state of the imaged tissue using a detected signal corresponding to the portion of the tail of the fluorescence spectrum having a wavelength between or equal to 900 nm and 2000 nm.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the state of the imaged tissue comprises comparing the imaged tissue to an intensity threshold to determine if at least a portion of the tissue is diseased tissue.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the diseased tissue is cancerous tissue.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising outputting a signal related to the imaged tissue to a display.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising outputting a signal related to the imaged tissue to a processor.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein a ratio of fluorescent probe fluorescence intensity and tissue autofluorescence intensity is greater in the tail portion than at the peak of the fluorescence spectrum of the fluorescent probe.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the peak of the fluorescence spectrum is greater than or equal to 600 nm.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising administering an effective amount of the fluorescent probe.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the fluorescent probe comprises at least one of indocyanine green, Fluorescein, methylene blue, cyanine5, cyanine5.5, cyanine7, cyanine7.5, silicon rhodamine, 5-ALA, IRDye 700, IRDye 800CW, IRDye 800RS, E350, squarylium dye, phthalocyanine, porphyrin derivative, and borondipyrromethane.
