Abstract

A conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”) impedes locomotion of a human target by providing a stimulus signal through the target via one or more electrodes. A propulsion system provides a force that launches the one or more electrodes toward the target to deliver the stimulus signal. The electrodes may be mechanically and electrically coupled to a deployment unit by a filament. An electrode may cooperate with a winding machine to wind the filament into a winding. The winding may be positioned inside the body of the electrode for deployment during launch.

Claims (33)

1. An electrode for a conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”), the electrode comprising:

a front wall;

a body comprising a forward portion detachably coupled to the front wall, wherein in response to the electrode impacting a target the forward portion of the body is configured to detach from the front wall; and

a filament having a first end portion opposite a second end portion, wherein the second end portion of the filament is coupled to a front portion of the electrode, wherein the front portion comprises at least one of the front wall and the body, and wherein the first end portion of the filament extends rearward the body.

2. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein in response to the electrode impacting the target the front wall is configured to remain coupled to the target while the forward portion of the body is configured to detach from the front wall.

3. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the second end portion of the filament is coupled to the front wall, and wherein the second end portion of the filament is configured to remain coupled to the front wall before, during, and after the electrode impacting the target.

4. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the second end portion of the filament is coupled to the front portion of the electrode between the front wall and the body.

5. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the front wall comprises a channel, and wherein the second end portion of the filament is coupled to the front portion of the electrode through the channel of the front wall.

6. The electrode of claim 5 , wherein the channel is deformed to couple the second end portion of the filament to the front wall.

7. The electrode of claim 5 , wherein the channel comprises a retainer configured to couple the second end portion of the filament to the front wall.

8. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the front wall defines a groove at least partially encircling a circumferential edge of the front wall.

9. The electrode of claim 8 , wherein the forward portion of the body is deformed to detachably couple the body to the groove of the front wall.

10. The electrode of claim 8 , further comprising a band positioned in the groove of the front wall, wherein the forward portion of the body is coupled to the band to detachably couple the body to the front wall.

11. A deployment unit for a conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”), the deployment unit comprising:

a propulsion system; and

an electrode configured to be launched by the propulsion system, wherein the electrode comprises:

a front wall;

a rear wall comprising an opening;

a body comprising a forward portion opposite a rearward portion, wherein the forward portion is detachably coupled to the front wall and the rearward portion is coupled to the rear wall, and wherein in response to the electrode being launched by the propulsion system and impacting a target the forward portion of the body is configured to decouple from the front wall; and

a filament having a first end portion opposite a second end portion, wherein the second end portion is coupled to a front portion of the electrode and the first end portion is disposed through the opening of the rear wall rearward the electrode.

12. The deployment unit of claim 11 , wherein the body defines a cavity, and wherein the filament is stored within the cavity.

13. The deployment unit of claim 12 , wherein the filament is wound into a winding within the cavity of the body.

14. The deployment unit of claim 11 , wherein the opening of the rear wall is at least partially aligned with a central axis of the body.

15. The deployment unit of claim 11 , wherein the opening of the rear wall is at least partially defined at a radial center of the rear wall.

16. An electrode for a conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”), the electrode comprising:

a front wall;

a spear coupled to the front wall;

a body comprising a forward portion detachably coupled to the front wall; and

a filament having a second end portion coupled to a front portion of the electrode, wherein in response to the CEW providing a stimulus signal through the filament and the spear coupling to a target, air in a gap between the second end portion of the filament and at least one of the spear, the front wall, and the body is ionized to provide the stimulus signal to the target.

17. The electrode of claim 16 , wherein the front portion of the electrode comprises the front wall, and wherein the second end portion of the filament extends forward of the front wall.

18. The electrode of claim 17 , wherein the second end portion of the filament extends forward of the front wall at a length configured to provide the stimulus signal via at least one of contact and ionization.

19. The electrode of claim 16 , wherein at least one of the spear, the front wall, and the body are formed of a metal configured to conduct the stimulus signal.

20. The electrode of claim 16 , wherein in response to impact of the electrode with the target the forward portion of the body is configured to detach from the front wall while the spear remains coupled to the target.
