Abstract

Methods for the reversal of hemorrhagic shock or hemorrhagic trauma. Methods for restoring mean arterial pressure to a normal range and reducing trauma adverse risks in a patient through the administration of oxygen reduced blood compositions.

Claims (20)

1. A method of reducing the risk of organ damage in a hemorrhagic trauma adverse event in a hemorrhagic trauma subject in need thereof comprising administering stored oxygen reduced blood to a subject having hemorrhagic trauma, said stored oxygen reduced blood comprising a blood product having a reduced oxygen saturation level compared to an oxygen saturation level prior to storage for a storage period, wherein said risk of organ damage is reduced relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said organ damage is selected from the group consisting of liver injury, lung failure, kidney failure, and heart failure.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hemorrhagic trauma subject in need thereof has increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT), or both increased AST and ALT prior to said administering.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said trauma subject in need thereof has a glucose level of greater than 200 mg/dL prior to said administering.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hemorrhagic trauma subject in need thereof comprises an increased lactate level prior to said administering.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hemorrhagic trauma subject in need thereof comprises increased urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (u-NGAL) prior to said administering.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hemorrhagic trauma subject in need thereof comprises increased serum creatinine prior to said administering.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hemorrhagic trauma subject in need thereof comprises increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) prior to said administering.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hemorrhagic trauma subject in need thereof comprises decreased hematocrit prior to said administering.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said stored oxygen reduced blood is depleted to an oxygen saturation of 20% or less prior to said storage period.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said stored oxygen reduced blood comprises an oxygen saturation of 20% or less during said storage period.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein said stored oxygen reduced blood is also carbon dioxide reduced.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein said storage period is up to 42 days.

14. The method of claim 3 , wherein said increased AST, ALT, or both increased AST and ALT level is reduced by at least 5% after said administering relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.

15. The method of claim 4 , wherein said glucose level is reduced by at least 10% after said administering relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.

16. The method of claim 5 , wherein said increased lactate level is reduced by at least 10% after said administering relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.

17. The method of claim 6 , wherein said increased urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (u-NGAL) is reduced by at least 10% after said administering relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.

18. The method of claim 7 , wherein said increased serum creatinine is reduced by at least 10% after said administering relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.

19. The method of claim 8 , wherein said increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is reduced by at least 10% after said administering relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.

20. The method of claim 9 , wherein said decreased hematocrit is increased after said administering relative to a patient receiving conventionally stored blood.
