Abstract

A network fabric application coupled to a data link layer is provided with access to network elements in an optical fiber network. The network fabric application defines a network fabric configuration comprising at least a subset of the network elements, wherein the network fabric forms a multi-path communication network among the subset. The network fabric is configured to transmit data among networked devices in the network fabric along the multi-path communication network.

Claims (37)

1. A method of provisioning a network fabric, comprising:

providing, to a first application that couples with a data link layer, access to network elements that are connected via network connections;

defining, by the first application, a network fabric configuration of at least a subset of the network elements;

provisioning, by the first application, at the data link layer the subset of network elements according to the network fabric configuration to operate as a network fabric, wherein the network fabric forms a first multi-path communication network among network devices, and wherein the network fabric configuration comprises data indicating a path between a pair of the network devices via the network elements;

configuring the network fabric to transmit data among the network devices within the network fabric along the first multi-path communication network;

modifying, by the first application, the network fabric configuration; and

provisioning, by the first application, the subset of network elements according to the modified network fabric configuration to form a second multi-path communication network that is different from the first multi-path communication network, wherein the path between the pair of network devices under the first multi-path communication network is different from the path between the same pair of network devices under the second multi-path communication network.

2. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein each of the network connections comprises at least one physical fiber optic cable.

3. The method recited in claim 2 , wherein each network connection comprises a matrix of physical channels within the at least one physical fiber optic cable.

4. The method recited in claim 3 , wherein the matrix of physical channels comprises a wavelength dimension and a time dimension.

5. The method recited in claim 4 , wherein the matrix of physical channels comprises at least 88 physical channels at each time slice, wherein each of the 88 channels has a distinct optical wavelength.

6. The method recited in claim 5 , wherein each of the at least 88 physical channels has a bandwidth of 100 gigabit.

7. The method recited in claim 3 , wherein the at least one physical fiber optic cable is divided into the matrix of physical channels according to a wavelength division multiplexing and a time division multiple access method.

8. The method recited in claim 3 , wherein the network fabric configuration comprises an association of each network path in the multi-path communication network to a specific physical channel from the matrix of physical channels.

9. The method recited in claim 3 , wherein the network configuration specifies an aggregation of more than one physical channel for a communication path between the pair of the network devices.

10. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein the network configuration supports optical burst switching.

11. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein providing access to the network elements comprises providing a connection object to the first application, wherein the connection object comprises attributes of the network connection.

12. The method recited in claim 11 , further comprising providing the connection object to a second application coupled with a network layer on top of the data link layer.

13. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein providing access to the network elements comprises providing, to the first application, access to control planes of the network elements.

14. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein providing access to the network elements comprises providing an abstraction layer that transmits resource data from a physical layer to the data link layer and instruction data from the data link layer to the physical layer.

15. The method recited in claim 14 , wherein providing access to the network elements further comprises providing an application programming interface to the first application through the abstraction layer.

16. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein the first application resides in a network device of the network devices.

17. The method recited in claim 16 , wherein the first application is part of an operating system of the network device.

18. The method recited in claim 16 , wherein the first application is part of an Ethernet driver.

19. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein the first application resides in a network element of the network elements.

20. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein the network fabric configuration comprises an image file.

21. The method recited in claim 20 , further comprising transmitting the image file to the subset of network elements.

22. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein the network fabric configuration is defined based on at least one of a security template, a database template, and a computational template.

23. An apparatus comprising:

at least one processor; and

memory including computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to at least:

provide, to a first application that couples with a data link layer, access to network elements that are connected via network connections;

define, by the first application, a network fabric configuration of at least a subset of the network elements;

provision, by the first application, at the data link layer the subset of network elements according to the network fabric configuration to operate as a network fabric, wherein the network fabric forms a first multi-path communication network among network devices, and wherein the network fabric configuration comprises data indicating a path between a pair of the network devices via the network elements;

configure the network fabric to transmit data among the network devices within the network fabric along the first multi-path communication network;

modify, by the first application, the network fabric configuration; and

provision, by the first application, the subset of network elements according to the modified network fabric configuration to form a second multi-path communication network that is different from the first multi-path communication network, wherein the path between the pair of network devices under the first multi-path communication network is different from the path between the same pair of network devices under the second multi-path communication network.
