Abstract

An injector may include a container having a wall with an interior surface and a seal assembly with an interior surface, the interior surfaces of the wall and the seal assembly defining a closed sterile reservoir filled with a drug product. The injector may also include a fluid delivery system comprising a clean, unsheathed, rigid container needle having a point disposed only partially through the seal assembly in a storage state, and disposed through the interior surface of the seal assembly into the sterile reservoir in a delivery state. Further, the injection may include an actuator that is adapted to move the container needle from the storage state to the delivery state.

Claims (30)

1. An injector comprising:

a container including a wall with an interior surface and a septum with an interior surface, the interior surfaces of the wall and the septum defining a reservoir, wherein the septum is fixed relative to the wall of the container;

a stopper positioned within the container;

a fluid delivery system comprising a container needle having a point, the container needle having a storage state and a delivery state; and

a clean barrier positioned exterior to the septum such that the septum and the clean barrier define an enclosed clean space disposed between the septum and the clean barrier, the point of the container needle being disposed in the enclosed clean space in the storage state and disposed through the septum in the delivery state,

wherein the container needle and the clean barrier are configured such that the container needle moves independently of the clean barrier in moving from the storage state to the delivery state.

2. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the clean barrier is free from contact with the septum.

3. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the clean barrier is immovable relative to the wall of the container.

4. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the clean barrier is coupled with the container needle such that the point of the container needle penetrates the clean barrier in the storage state.

5. The injector of claim 1 , comprising an actuator configured to move the container needle from the storage state to the delivery state.

6. The injector of claim 5 , comprising a mechanical input device coupled to the actuator.

7. The injector of claim 5 , comprising an electrical or electro-mechanical input device coupled to the actuator.

8. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the septum comprises a flexible unitary wall.

9. The injector of claim 1 , comprising:

an injection needle for insertion into a patient; and

a flexible tubing connecting the container needle and the injection needle.

10. The injector of claim 1 , comprising a drug disposed in the container, the drug comprising at least one of: a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a PCSK9-specific antibody, an erythropoiesis stimulating agent, a TNF blocker, an interleukin-receptor specific antibody, an IGF-receptor specific antibody, or a TGF-specific antibody.

11. A method comprising:

providing the injector of claim 1 ;

filling the reservoir of the container with a drug, the reservoir after filling being defined by the interior surface of the wall of the container, the interior surface of the septum, and the stopper positioned within the container;

positioning the clean barrier exterior to the septum such that the septum and the clean barrier define the enclosed clean space disposed between the septum and the clean barrier; and

positioning the point of the container needle within the enclosed clean space to define the storage state, the point of the container needle being configured to be disposed through the septum in the delivery state.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the clean barrier is free from contact with the septum.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the clean barrier is immovable relative to the wall of the container.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the clean barrier is coupled with the container needle such that the point of the container needle penetrates the clean barrier in the storage state.

15. The method of claim 11 , the drug comprising at least one of: a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, a PCSK9-specific antibody, an erythropoiesis stimulating agent, a TNF blocker, an interleukin-receptor specific antibody, an IGF-receptor specific antibody, or a TGF-specific antibody.

16. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the injector is manufactured with the point of the container needle disposed in the enclosed clean space in the storage state.

17. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the point of the container needle is disposed in the enclosed clean space prior to any user-initiated movement of the container needle relative to the container.

18. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the injector is packaged with the point of the container needle disposed in the enclosed clean space in the storage state.

19. The injector of claim 1 , wherein the point of the container needle is initially, prior to use, disposed stationarily in the enclosed clean space in the storage state.
