Abstract

Aspects of this disclosure relate to a surface acoustic wave filter with an integrated temperature sensor. The integrated temperature sensor can be a resistive thermal device configured as a reflective grating for a surface acoustic wave resonator, for example. A radio frequency system can provide over temperature protection by reducing a power level of a radio frequency signal provided to the surface acoustic wave filter responsive to an indication of temperature provided by the integrated temperature sensor satisfying a threshold.

Claims (28)

1. A method of over temperature protection for an acoustic wave filter, the method comprising:

providing an indication of temperature of an acoustic wave filter using a temperature sensor that is integrated with the acoustic wave filter;

detecting that the indication of temperature of the acoustic wave filter satisfies a threshold, the threshold being associated with an over temperature condition; and

in response to the detecting, reducing a power level of a radio frequency signal provided to the acoustic wave filter to thereby prevent damage to the acoustic wave filter.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the temperature sensor includes a resistive thermal device having a resistance in a range from 1 kilo-Ohm to 10 kilo-Ohms.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the temperature sensor includes a resistive thermal device having a resistance of at least 500 Ohms.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the temperature sensor is connected between a port of the acoustic wave filter and ground.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the acoustic wave filter includes a bulk acoustic wave resonator and the temperature sensor includes a resistive thermal device.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the temperature sensor includes a resistive thermal device arranged as a reflective grating of at least one acoustic wave resonator of the acoustic wave filter.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the reducing includes reducing an amplitude of the radio frequency signal to approximately zero.

8. A radio frequency system with over temperature protection, the radio frequency system comprising:

an acoustic wave filter configured to filter a radio frequency signal, the acoustic wave filter including acoustic wave resonators and an integrated temperature sensor, the integrated temperature sensor configured to provide an indication of temperature of the acoustic wave filter; and

an over temperature circuit configured to reduce a power level of the radio frequency signal responsive to the indication of temperature of the acoustic wave filter satisfying a threshold to thereby prevent damage to the acoustic wave filter.

9. The radio frequency system of claim 8 wherein the integrated temperature sensor includes a resistive thermal device having a resistance in a range from 1 kilo-Ohm to 10 kilo-Ohms.

10. The radio frequency system of claim 8 wherein the acoustic wave resonators include a bulk acoustic wave resonator.

11. The radio frequency system of claim 8 wherein the integrated temperature sensor includes a resistive thermal device arranged as a reflective grating of at least one of the acoustic wave resonators.

12. The radio frequency system of claim 8 wherein the integrated temperature sensor includes a resistive thermal device connected between a port of the acoustic wave filter and ground.

13. The radio frequency system of claim 12 further comprising an LC circuit coupled to the port of the acoustic wave filter, the LC circuit including an inductor and a capacitor, and the LC circuit configured to block a radio frequency component of a signal at the port and to pass a direct current component of the signal at the port.

14. The radio frequency system of claim 8 further comprising a transmit signal path including a power amplifier, the transmit path configured to provide the radio frequency signal to the acoustic wave filter, and the transmit signal path configured to receive an output signal of the over temperature circuit.

15. An acoustic wave filter with integrated temperature sensing, the acoustic wave filter comprising:

a plurality of acoustic wave resonators configured to filter a radio frequency signal; and

a resistive thermal device having a resistance that changes with temperature, the resistance of the resistive thermal device being indicative of a temperature of the plurality of acoustic wave resonators, the resistive thermal device being connected between a port of the acoustic wave filter and ground, and the resistance of the resistive thermal device being at least 500 Ohms.
