Abstract

A system and method of coordinated motion includes a device with one or more movable elements and one or more processors. The device is configured to discover a second device, determine a desired type of coordinated motion based on the discovery of the second device, request a movement token of a first type from a token service, the first type being selected based on the desired type of coordinated motion, receive the movement token from the token service, receive configuration data, kinematic data, or planned motion data for the second device, plan a first motion for a movable element of the movable elements based on the first type of the movement token and the configuration data, the kinematic data, or the planned motion data for the second device, and execute the first motion while the device holds the movement token. The device and the second device are different heterogeneous devices.

Claims (67)

1. A device comprising:

one or more movable elements; and

one or more processors, wherein any of the one or more processors uses a shared interface between the device and a second device to access services for supporting interoperability between the device and the second device;

wherein the device is configured to:

discover the second device using the shared interface;

determine a desired type of coordinated motion based on the discovery of the second device;

request a movement token of a first type from a token service through the shared interface, the first type being selected based on the desired type of coordinated motion;

receive the movement token from the token service;

receive configuration data, kinematic data, or planned motion data for the second device through the shared interface, the device and the second device being different heterogeneous devices;

plan a first motion for a first movable element of the movable elements based on the first type of the movement token and the configuration data, the kinematic data, or the planned motion data for the second device; and

execute the first motion while the device holds the movement token.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is a computer-assisted surgical device, a surgical table, an imaging device, or a focal interventional device.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is further configured to raise an alarm when the device is unable to execute the first motion consistent with the movement token.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is further configured to monitor the shared interface for alerts generated by the second device.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first type of the movement token is an exclusive-motion token, a master follow-me token, a slave follow-me token, a master collision-avoidance token, a slave collision-avoidance token, or a passive collision-avoidance token.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein:

the first type of the movement token is the master follow-me token; and

the device is further configured to share the first motion using a blackboard service of the shared interface.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein:

the first type of the movement token is the slave follow-me token; and

the device is further configured to:

receive a planned second motion for the second device from a publisher service of the shared interface; and

plan the first motion for the first movable element that is compliant with the planned second motion.

8. The device of claim 5 , wherein:

the first type of the movement token is the master collision-avoidance token; and

the device is further configured to share the first motion using a blackboard service of the shared interface.

9. The device of claim 5 , wherein:

the first type of the movement token is the slave collision-avoidance token; and

the device is further configured to:

receive a planned second motion for the second device from a publisher service of the shared interface; and

plan the first motion for the first movable element that avoids a collision with the second device.

10. The device of claim 5 , wherein:

the first type of the movement token is the passive collision-avoidance token; and

the device is further configured to periodically share data associated with its current configuration, kinematics, statics, or dynamics.

11. The device of any one of claim 1 , wherein the device is further configured to:

request assignment of a second movement token to the second device through the shared interface; and receive a confirmation that the second movement token is assigned.

12. A method of coordinated motion, the method comprising:

accessing, by a first device, a shared interface between the first device and a second device;

discovering, by the first device, the second device using the shared interface;

determining, by the first device, a desired type of coordinated motion based on the discovery of the second device;

requesting, by the first device, a movement token of a first type from a token service through the shared interface, the first type being selected based on the desired type of coordinated motion;

receiving, by the first device, the movement token from the token service;

receiving, by the first device, configuration data, kinematic data, or planned motion data for the second device through the shared interface, the first device and the second device being different heterogeneous devices;

planning, by the first device, a first motion for a movable element of the first device based on the first type of the movement token and the configuration data, the kinematic data, or the motion planning data for the second device; and

executing, by the first device, the first motion while the first device holds the movement token.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising raising, by the first device, an alarm when the first device is unable to execute the first motion consistent with the movement token.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising monitoring, by the first device, the shared interface for alerts generated by the second device.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first type of the movement token is an exclusive-motion token, a master follow-me token, a slave follow-me token, a master collision-avoidance token, a slave collision-avoidance token, or a passive collision-avoidance token.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the first type of the movement token is the master follow-me token; and

the method further comprises sharing the first motion using a blackboard service of the shared interface.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the first type of the movement token is the slave follow-me token; and

the method further comprises:

receiving a planned second motion for the second device from a publisher service of the shared interface; and
