Abstract

The present invention provides a method for designing of a piece of apparel in particular an upper of a shoe, comprising the steps of providing at least one first panel including a plurality of feature points in an essentially two-dimensional configuration, arranging the at least one first panel on a first reference body in a three-dimensional configuration representing the piece of apparel to be designed, generating a first mapping between the two-dimensional configuration of the at least one first panel and the three-dimensional configuration of the at least one first panel using the plurality of feature points and designing the piece of apparel using the first mapping.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein arranging the at least one first panel on the first reference body comprises:

deforming at least a portion of the at least one first panel; and

joining a first section and a second section of the at least one first panel along a common edge.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the steps a. and b. involve manufacture and physical manipulation of the at least one first panel.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein generating the first mapping involves a three-dimensional scanning technique.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of feature points are configured to allow a unique identification of the position of each feature point.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a manufacturing template for the piece of apparel,

7. The method according to claim 6 , further comprising:

generating a second mapping between the manufacturing template and the two-dimensional reference model of the at least one first panel.

8. The method according to claim 7 , further comprising:

generating a third mapping between the three-dimensional reference model of the at least one first panel and the manufacturing template,

wherein the third mapping is based on the first mapping and the second mapping.

9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising:

manufacturing at least one second panel based on the manufacturing template in a two-dimensional configuration.

10. The method according to claim 9 , further comprising:

arranging the at least one second panel on a second reference body having the same shape as the first reference body in a three-dimensional configuration representing the piece of apparel to be designed, and generating a three-dimensional reference model of the at least one second panel based on the at least one second panel in the three-dimensional configuration.

11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising:

generating a fourth mapping between the three-dimensional reference model of the at least one first panel and the three-dimensional reference model of the at least one second panel.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein one or more of the first, the second, the third and the fourth mapping is bijective and true to scale.

13. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising:

iteratively designing the piece of apparel using one or more of the first, the second, the third, and the fourth mapping.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising integrated design and manufacture of the piece of apparel including;

manufacturing the at least one second panel based on the two-dimensional manufacturing template; and

assembling the piece of apparel using the at least one second panel.

15. The method according to claim 10 , wherein one or more of the two-dimensional reference model of the at least one first panel, the three-dimensional reference model of the at least one first panel, the three-dimensional reference model of the at least one second panel, and the manufacturing template is an editable computer aided design model.

16. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the steps a. and b. involve manufacture and physical manipulation of the at least one first panel, wherein the at least one first panel comprises a first material and the at least one second panel comprises a second material, and wherein the first material is different from the second material.

17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the piece of apparel is an upper of a shoe.
