Tire with shaped tread
A method of making a tire includes placing substantially circular sheets of polymeric material on top of each other until a tire is built to a predetermined width. A predetermined tread shape is formed along a circumference of the substantially circular sheets of polymeric material.
1. A method of making a tire comprising:
providing a first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material having a thickness in the axial direction between 0.02 mm and 2 mm;
forming a first predetermined tread shape along a circumference of the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material, the first predetermined tread shape including a shape defining at least one of lugs, blocks, grooves, ribs, and sipes;
providing a second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material having a thickness in the axial direction between 0.02 mm and 2 mm;
forming a second predetermined tread shape along a circumference of the second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material, the second predetermined tread shape including a shape defining at least one of lugs, blocks, grooves, ribs, and sipes;
placing the second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material on the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material after the step of forming the second predetermined tread shape along the circumference of the second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material;
providing additional substantially circular sheets of polymeric material;
forming a predetermined tread shape along a circumference of a plurality of the additional substantially circular sheets of polymeric material, the predetermined tread shape including a shape defining at least one of lugs, blocks, grooves, ribs, and sipes;
placing the additional substantially circular sheets of polymeric material on the second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material after the step of forming the predetermined tread shape along the circumference of the plurality of the additional substantially circular sheets of polymeric material, until a tire is built.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising curing the tire.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first predetermined tread shape is substantially identical to the second predetermined tread shape.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forming the first predetermined tread shape includes forming a first plurality of tread lugs along the circumference of the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material, and wherein the forming the second predetermined tread shape includes forming a second plurality of tread lugs along the circumference of the second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the forming the first plurality of tread lugs includes forming a void in one of the first plurality of tread lugs, and wherein the forming the second plurality of tread lugs includes forming a void in one of the second plurality of tread lugs.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the void in the one of the first plurality of tread lugs is a closed geometric shape, and wherein the void in the one of the second plurality of tread lugs is a closed geometric shape.
7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the void in the one of the first plurality of tread lugs defines an opening with a surface of the one of the first plurality of tread lugs, and wherein the void in the one of the second plurality of tread lugs defines an opening with a surface of the one of the second plurality of tread lugs.
8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising placing a reinforcement on the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material prior to placing the second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material on the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material.
9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising placing a protruding object on the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material prior to placing the second substantially circular sheet of polymeric material on the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material, wherein the protruding object is placed such that at least a portion of the protruding object extends beyond the circumference of the first substantially circular sheet of polymeric material.
