Abstract

An electronic device that can be worn by a user can include a processing unit and one or more sensors operatively connected to the processing unit. The processing unit can be adapted to determine an installation position of the electronic device based on one or more signals received from at least one sensor.

Claims (62)

1. A method of determining whether a wireless wearable device is being worn, comprising:

acquiring a first set of acceleration values from a first accelerometer included in a first wireless wearable device, the first set of acceleration values including acceleration values acquired at different times;

acquiring a second set of acceleration values from a second accelerometer included in a second wireless wearable device, the second set of acceleration values including acceleration values acquired at different times;

comparing the first set of acceleration values to the second set of acceleration values; and

determining at a processor, based at least in part on the comparison of the first set of acceleration values to the second set of acceleration values, whether the first wireless wearable device is being worn by a user.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, at the processor and based at least in part on the comparison of the first set of acceleration values to the second set of acceleration values, whether the second wireless wearable device is being worn by the user.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first wireless wearable device is a first wireless earbud;

the first accelerometer comprises a first z-axis accelerometer;

the second wireless wearable device is a second wireless earbud;

the second accelerometer comprises a second z-axis accelerometer; and

determining whether the first wireless wearable device is being worn by the user comprises:

determining whether first values in the first set of acceleration values and second values in the second set of acceleration values are inversely correlated.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

determining whether the first wireless wearable device is being worn by the user comprises:

determining the first wireless wearable device transitioned from being worn to not being worn by the user; and

the method further comprises:

ceasing a data transmission to the first wireless wearable device in response to determining the first wireless wearable device transitioned from being worn to not being worn by the user.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

determining whether the first wireless wearable device is being worn by the user comprises:

determining the first wireless wearable device transitioned from being worn to not being worn by the user; and

the method further comprises:

pausing an audio transmission to the first wearable device in response to determining the first wireless wearable device transitioned from being worn to not being worn by the user.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

determining whether the first wireless wearable device is being worn by the user comprises:

determining the first wireless wearable device transitioned from being worn to not being worn by the user; and

the method further comprises:

providing a warning to the user in response to determining the first wireless wearable device transitioned from being worn to not being worn by the user.

7. Apparatus, comprising:

a wireless wearable device;

an accelerometer disposed in the wireless wearable device; and

a processor configured to:

acquire, using the accelerometer, a set of acceleration values including acceleration values acquired at different times;

compute an aggregate metric using the acceleration values acquired at different times, the aggregate metric indicating a net-positive acceleration condition a net-negative acceleration condition, or a no acceleration condition over a period of time; and

determine, based on the net-positive acceleration condition or the net-negative acceleration condition, an installation position of the wireless wearable device.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the wireless wearable device comprises a health monitoring sensor.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein determining the installation position of the wireless wearable device comprises:

determining whether the wearable device is installed on a left side or a right side of a user of the wireless wearable device.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the processor is disposed in a portable electronic device.

11. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the processor is disposed in the wireless wearable device.

12. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the processor is configured to compute the aggregate metric, using the acceleration values acquired at different times, by determining at least one of a mean, median, or mode of the the acceleration values acquired at different times.

13. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein:

the processor is configured to compute the aggregate metric by analyzing a distribution of the acceleration values acquired at different times.

14. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein:

the accelerometer is a multi-axis accelerometer; and

the acceleration values acquired at different times are measured along three axes of the multi-axis accelerometer.

15. Apparatus, comprising:

a wireless wearable device;

a set of one or more accelerometers disposed in the wearable device; and

a processor configured to:

acquire, using the set of one or more accelerometers, a set of acceleration values including acceleration values acquired at different times;

determine, from the set of acceleration values acquired at different times, an installation position of the wireless wearable device on a user; and

in response to the determined installation position of the wireless wearable device on the user, adjust an operation of the wireless wearable device, the operation of the wireless device based at least in part on the installation position.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine an orientation of the wireless wearable device; and

determine the installation position of the wearable device on the user using the determined orientation.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the wireless wearable device comprises a health monitoring sensor.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein determining the installation position of the wireless wearable device on the user comprises:

determining whether the wearable device is installed on a left side or a right side of the user.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is disposed in a portable electronic device, apart from the wireless wearable device.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor is disposed in the wireless wearable device.
