Abstract

A material medium, such as an optical fiber or electrical cable, is used to carry services. The material medium is monitored with at least one diagnostic sensor. The diagnostic sensor may measure the operational health of the material medium, or may measure local environmental conditions around the material medium.

Claims (46)

1. A method, comprising:

organizing sensors into a mesh network according to a hierarchical relationship defining how the sensors communicate;

constructing a topology graph of the mesh network;

monitoring, by a first sensor of the sensors, a transmission cable to generate sensor data relating to environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable;

transmitting the sensor data, from the first sensor to a second sensor of the sensors at a highest level of the hierarchical relationship, via a path of the mesh network determined based on the hierarchical relationship;

transmitting power to at least one of the sensors via a conduit that houses the transmission cable, wherein the conduit is employed as a transmission medium for the power; and

determining a connectivity status of the transmission cable based on the topology graph of the mesh network and the sensor data relating to the environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the sensor data comprises:

wireles sly transmitting a radio frequency signal comprising the sensor data.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the power comprises transmitting the power to facilitate induction battery charging of the at least one of the sensors via the conduit that houses the transmission cable.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

wirelessly transmitting the sensor data from the second sensor to a roaming unit when the roaming unit is within communication range of the second sensor.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting the sensor data from the second sensor to a server via a back haul communication link.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor data relating to environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable comprises wind speed data.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the sensor data comprises:

transmitting the sensor data via the conduit that houses the transmission cable, wherein the conduit is employed as the transmission medium for the sensor data.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein transmitting the sensor data via the conduit that houses the transmission cable comprises:

employing the conduit as a waveguide.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmission cable is a communication cable.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmission cable is an electrical power cable.

11. A method, comprising:

constructing, by a system comprising a processor, a topology graph of a network of a sensors, the sensors organized into the network according to a hierarchical relationship defining how the sensors communicate;

monitoring, by the system via a first sensor of the sensors, a transmission cable to generate sensor data relating to environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable;

transmitting, by the system via a conduit that houses the transmission cable by using the conduit as a waveguide for the transmission, an electromagnetic signal comprising the sensor data, via the first sensor to a second sensor of the sensors at a highest level of the hierarchical relationship, via a path of the network determined based on the hierarchical relationship;

providing, by the system, power to at least one of the sensors via the conduit that houses the transmission cable, wherein the conduit is employed as a transmission medium for the power; and

determining, by the system, a connectivity status of the transmission cable based on the topology graph of the network and the sensor data relating to the environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the sensor data relating to environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable comprises wind speed data.

13. A system, comprising:

first sensor, of sensors, at a highest level of a hierarchical relationship defining how the sensors communicate according to an organization of the sensors as a mesh network;

a second sensor of the sensors to:

monitor a transmission cable to generate sensor data relating to environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable,

transmit the sensor data towards the first sensor via a path of the mesh network determined based on the hierarchical relationship, and

receive power via a conduit that houses the transmission cable, wherein the conduit is employed as a transmission medium for the power; and

a server to:

construct a topology graph of the mesh network, and determine a connectivity status of the transmission cable based on the topology graph of the mesh network and the sensor data relating to the environmental conditions in proximity to the transmission cable.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second sensor comprises:

an energy harvesting module to capture energy induced by electromagnetic energy from the power received via the conduit that houses the transmission cable.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first sensor comprises:

a communications interface to wirelessly transmit the sensor data to a roaming unit when the roaming unit is within communication range of the first sensor.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first sensor comprises:

a communications interface to transmit the sensor data to the server via a back haul communication link.
