Abstract

RFID tags may compensate for non-RFID power sources by automatically enforcing data or state persistence even while powered. A tag may measure a time interval between successive detected modulated reader transmissions. If the interval exceeds a minimum time, then the tag may deassert a protocol flag, erase data, and/or change tag operating states, even if the tag would normally not perform these actions while powered.

Claims (60)

1. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) integrated circuit (IC) configured to deassert an asserted protocol flag that, while the IC has sufficient power to maintain the protocol flag value, would otherwise remain asserted, the IC comprising:

a demodulator block configured to demodulate reader commands; and

a processing block coupled to the demodulator block and configured to:

receive, via the demodulator block, a first reader command;

assert the protocol flag in response to receiving the first reader command; and

while the IC has sufficient power to operate:

measure a time interval since receiving a first reader signal; and

deassert the asserted protocol flag when the measured time interval exceeds a threshold without the IC receiving a second reader signal.

2. The RFID IC of claim 1 , wherein the first reader signal is one of:

the first reader command, and

a second reader command subsequent to the first reader command.

3. The RFID IC of claim 1 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received by determining that the demodulator block demodulated one of a correctly formed reader command and a malformed reader command.

4. The RFID IC of claim 1 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received by determining that the demodulator block demodulated at least one of:

a delimiter,

a preamble according to the Gen2 Protocol;

a framesync according to the Gen2 Protocol; and

a command code.

5. The RFID IC of claim 1 , further comprising a rectifier configured to harvest the sufficient power to operate from RF signals from at least one of reader and non-reader sources.

6. The RFID IC of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is based on a protocol-specified persistence time for the asserted protocol flag.

7. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) integrated circuit (IC) configured to erase volatile stored data that, while the IC has sufficient power to maintain the volatile stored data, would otherwise be retained, the IC comprising:

a volatile memory configured to store the data;

a demodulator block configured to demodulate reader commands; and

a processing block coupled to the memory and the demodulator block and configured to:

receive, via the demodulator block, a first reader command;

store data in the memory in response to receiving the first reader command; and

while the IC has sufficient power to operate:

measure a time interval since receiving a first reader signal; and

erase the stored data when the measured time interval exceeds a threshold without the IC receiving a second reader signal.

8. The RFID IC of claim 7 , wherein the first reader signal is one of:

the first reader command, and

a second reader command subsequent to the first reader command.

9. The RFID IC of claim 7 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received by determining that the demodulator block demodulated one of a correctly formed reader command and a malformed reader command.

10. The RFID IC of claim 7 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received by determining that the demodulator block demodulated at least one of:

a delimiter,

a preamble according to the Gen2 Protocol,

a framesync according to the Gen2 Protocol, and

a command code.

11. The RFID IC of claim 7 , further comprising a rectifier configured to harvest the sufficient power to operate from RF signals from readers and non-reader sources.

12. The RFID IC of claim 7 , wherein the threshold is dynamically determined.

13. The RFID IC of claim 7 , wherein the stored data is cryptographic state information.

14. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) integrated circuit (IC) configured to transition from a first operating state to a second operating state when the IC, while having sufficient power to maintain an operating state, would otherwise remain in the first operating state, the IC comprising:

a demodulator block configured to demodulate reader commands; and

a processing block coupled to the demodulator block and configured to:

receive, via the demodulator block, a first reader command;

enter to the first operating state in response to receiving the first reader command; and

while the IC has sufficient power to operate:

measure a time interval since receiving a first reader signal; and

transition from the first operating state to the second operating state when the measured time interval exceeds a threshold without the IC receiving a second reader signal.

15. The RFID IC of claim 14 , wherein the first reader signal is one of:

the first reader command, and

a second reader command subsequent to the first reader command.

16. The RFID IC of claim 14 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received by determining that the demodulator block demodulated one of a correctly formed command and a malformed reader command.

17. The RFID IC of claim 14 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received by determining that the demodulator block demodulated at least one of:

a delimiter,

a preamble according to the Gen2 Protocol,

a framesync according to the Gen2 Protocol, and

a command code.

18. The RFID IC of claim 14 , further comprising a rectifier configured to harvest the sufficient power to operate from RF signals from readers and non-reader sources.

19. The RFID IC of claim 14 , wherein the threshold is dynamically determined.

20. The RFID IC of claim 14 , wherein the first operating state is a private state and the second operating state is a public state and in which IC access is less restrictive in the private state than in the public state.
