Abstract

RFID tags may compensate for non-RFID power sources by automatically enforcing data or state persistence even while powered. A tag may measure a time interval between successive detected modulated reader transmissions. If the interval exceeds a minimum time, then the tag may deassert a protocol flag, erase data, and/or change tag operating states, even if the tag would normally not perform these actions while powered.

Claims (61)

1. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) integrated circuit (IC) configured to enforce protocol-flag persistence, the RFID IC comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive reader commands; and

a processing block coupled to the transceiver and configured to:

receive, via the transceiver, a reader command;

assert a protocol flag in response to receiving the reader command, wherein the asserted protocol flag is configured to remain asserted indefinitely while the RFID IC has sufficient power to operate; and

while the RFID IC has sufficient power to operate:

determine whether any active RFID readers are present; and

upon determining that no active RFID readers are present, deassert the protocol flag, otherwise allow the protocol flag to remain asserted.

2. The RFID IC of claim 1 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine whether any active RFID readers are present by:

measuring a time interval since receiving a first reader signal; and

if the time interval exceeds a threshold without the RFID IC receiving a second reader signal, then determining that no active RFID readers are present.

3. The RFID IC of claim 2 , wherein the processing block is further configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received upon:

receiving an amplitude-modulated reader transmission, or

receiving a correctly formed reader command or a malformed reader command.

4. The RFID IC of claim 2 , wherein the processing block is further configured to:

determine that the second reader signal has been received upon detecting at least one of a delimiter, a preamble according to the Gen2 Protocol, a framesync according to the Gen2 Protocol, and a command code.

5. The RFID IC of claim 2 , wherein the threshold is based on a protocol-specified persistence time for the asserted protocol flag.

6. The RFID IC of claim 1 , wherein the RFID IC is configured to harvest sufficient power to operate from a non-reader source.

7. The RFID IC of claim 6 , wherein the processing block is further configured to:

receive, via the transceiver, reader signals on a first radio frequency range; and

the RFID IC is further configured to harvest power from the non-reader source on a second radio frequency range different from the first radio frequency range.

8. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) integrated circuit (IC) configured to enforce data persistence, the RFID IC comprising:

a volatile memory configured to store data and maintain stored data indefinitely while the RFID IC has sufficient power to operate;

a transceiver configured to receive reader commands; and

a processing block coupled to the volatile memory and the transceiver and configured to:

receive, via the transceiver, a reader command;

store data in the volatile memory in response to receiving the reader command; and

while the RFID IC has sufficient power to operate:

determine whether any active RFID readers are present; and

upon determining that no active RFID readers are present, clear the data, otherwise retain the data.

9. The RFID IC of claim 8 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine whether any active RFID readers are present by:

measuring a time interval since receiving a first reader signal; and

if the time interval exceeds a threshold without the RFID IC receiving a second reader signal, then determining that no active RFID readers are present.

10. The RFID IC of claim 9 , wherein the processing block is further configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received upon:

receiving an amplitude-modulated reader transmission, or

receiving a correctly formed reader command or a malformed reader command.

11. The RFID IC of claim 9 , wherein the processing block is further configured to:

determine that the second reader signal has been received upon detecting at least one of a delimiter, a preamble according to the Gen2 Protocol, a framesync according to the Gen2 Protocol, and a command code.

12. The RFID IC of claim 8 , wherein the stored data is cryptographic state information.

13. The RFID IC of claim 8 , wherein:

the volatile memory is associated with a protocol flag,

storing the data comprises asserting the protocol flag, and

clearing the data comprises deasserting the protocol flag.

14. The RFID IC of claim 8 , wherein the RFID IC is configured to harvest sufficient power to operate from a non-reader source.

15. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) integrated circuit (IC) configured to reset, the RFID IC comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive reader signals; and

a processing block coupled to the transceiver and configured to:

cause the RFID IC to transition from a power-up state to an operating state, wherein the RFID IC is configured to stay in the operating state indefinitely while the RFID IC has sufficient power to operate; and

while the RFID IC has sufficient power to operate:

determine whether any active RFID readers are present; and

upon determining that no active RFID readers are present, cause the RFID IC to exit the operating state, otherwise cause the RFID IC to remain in the operating state.

16. The RFID IC of claim 15 , wherein the processing block is configured to determine whether any active RFID readers are present by:

measuring a time interval since receiving a first reader signal; and

if the time interval exceeds a threshold without the RFID IC receiving a second reader signal, then determining that no active RFID readers are present.

17. The RFID IC of claim 16 , wherein the processing block is further configured to determine that the second reader signal has been received upon:

receiving an amplitude-modulated reader transmission, or

receiving a correctly formed reader command or a malformed reader command.

18. The RFID IC of claim 16 , wherein the processing block is further configured to:

determine that the second reader signal has been received upon detecting at least one of a delimiter, a preamble according to the Gen2 Protocol, a framesync according to the Gen2 Protocol, and a command code.

19. The RFID IC of claim 16 , wherein the first operating state is a private state and the second operating state is a public state, and in which IC access is less restrictive in the private state than in the public state.

20. The RFID IC of claim 15 , wherein the RFID IC is configured to harvest sufficient power to operate from a non-reader source.
