Abstract

In examples, systems and methods for an antenna are described. The antenna array includes a flexible substrate and a plurality of antenna elements forming a two-dimensional array. Each antenna element includes a stripline feed located halfway through a height dimension of the flexible substrate. Each antenna element further includes a rectangular patch antenna having a first dimension equal to one-half of a wavelength at a given frequency of operation, and a second dimension equal to three-quarters of the wavelength at the given frequency of operation. Moreover, each antenna element includes a slot in the rectangular patch having a slot-length approximately equal to 0.925 of a wavelength at the given frequency of operation, where the stripline feed crosses under the rectangular patch and is orthogonal to a polarization of the slot.

Claims (35)

a slot in the rectangular patch antenna having a slot-length approximately equal to 0.925 of the wavelength at the given frequency of operation, wherein the slot forms a U-shape, and wherein the stripline feed crosses under the rectangular patch and is orthogonal to a polarization of the slot.

2. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the rectangular patch antenna has an input impedance of approximately 50 Ohms at the given frequency of operation.

3. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the rectangular patch antenna has a second dimension equal to three-quarters of the wavelength at the given frequency of operation.

4. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the stripline feed crosses perpendicular to both arms of the U-shape.

5. The antenna of claim 4 , wherein the stripline crosses the center portion of a linear portion of both arms of the U-shape.

6. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the U-shape is centered on the rectangular patch antenna.

7. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the substrate has a thickness and the stripline is located halfway through the thickness.

8. The antenna of claim 1 , further comprising a backplane located on an opposite side of the substrate from the rectangular patch antenna.

9. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the slot has primarily a linear polarization.

10. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the rectangular patch antenna is configured to operate with the given frequency being a W-band frequency.

11. The antenna of claim 10 , wherein a thickness of the rectangular patch antenna and the substrate is less than 10 mil.

12. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the rectangular patch antenna is configured to operate with the given frequency being a K-band frequency.

13. The antenna of claim 12 , wherein a thickness of the rectangular patch antenna and the substrate is less than 20 mil.

14. The antenna of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is flexible.

15. A method of radiating a signal comprising:

feeding an electromagnetic signal to a rectangular patch antenna by a stripline located below the rectangular patch antenna and separated from the rectangular patch antenna by a portion of a substrate, wherein the substrate has a thickness and the stripline is located halfway through the thickness, and wherein the rectangular patch antenna has a first dimension equal to one-half of a wavelength at a given frequency of operation; and

inducing an electromagnetic field in a slot of the rectangular patch antenna, wherein the slot has:

a length approximately equal to 0.925 of the wavelength at the given frequency of operation, and
