Abstract

A respiratory system is configured to pressurize and deliver a flow of respiratory gas to a patient's airways. The respiratory system includes a cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient's face and a blower mounted to the cushion and configured to pressurize a flow of respiratory gas. An interface structure is attached to an outlet of the blower and an aperture in the cushion. The interface structure forms a gas flow path between the cushion and the blower. The gas flow path is configured to deliver the pressurized respiratory gas from the blower through the aperture in the cushion. The gas flow path is also configured to vent exhaled gas from the aperture in the cushion to atmosphere. The respiratory system also includes headgear configured to support the cushion and the blower on the patient's face.

Claims (36)

1. A respiratory system configured to pressurize and deliver a flow of respiratory gas to a patient's airways, the respiratory system comprising:

a cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient's face, the cushion forming at least part of a plenum chamber;

a blower mounted to and supported by the plenum chamber and configured to pressurize the flow of respiratory gas;

an interface structure that is attached to an outlet of the blower and an aperture in the plenum chamber, the interface structure forming a gas flow path between the plenum chamber and the blower, the gas flow path being configured to deliver the pressurized respiratory gas from the blower through the aperture in the plenum chamber and being configured to vent exhaled gas from the aperture in the plenum chamber to atmosphere; and

headgear configured to support the plenum chamber and the blower on the patient's face,

wherein the gas vented from the aperture in the plenum chamber is discharged through the headgear.

2. The respiratory system of claim 1 , wherein the blower is encapsulated within a housing configured to mitigate the transmission of noise generated by the blower.

3. The respiratory system of claim 2 , wherein the housing is overmoulded onto the blower.

4. The respiratory system of claim 1 , wherein the cushion is a nasal cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient's nose.

5. The respiratory system of claim 1 , wherein the headgear comprises an enclosed channel configured to receive wiring from the blower.

6. The respiratory system of claim 1 , further comprising a muffler fitted over an inlet of the blower and attached to the headgear.

7. A respiratory system configured to pressurize and deliver a flow of respiratory gas to a patient's airways, the respiratory system comprising:

a cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient's face, the cushion forming at least part of a plenum chamber, a superior side of the plenum chamber comprising an aperture;

a blower mounted to the plenum chamber and configured to pressurize a flow of respiratory gas, the blower comprising an air outlet inserted into the aperture of the plenum chamber, the aperture of the plenum chamber and the air outlet of the blower forming a gas flow path configured to deliver pressurized respiratory gas from the blower to the plenum chamber and configured to vent exhaled gas from the plenum chamber to atmosphere; and

headgear configured to support the plenum chamber and the blower on the patient's face,

wherein the blower is configured to receive the respiratory gas through the headgear, pressurize the respiratory gas, and then discharge the pressurized flow of respiratory gas through the gas flow path.

8. The respiratory system of claim 7 , wherein the blower is encapsulated within a housing configured to mitigate the transmission of noise generated by the blower.

9. The respiratory system of claim 8 , wherein the housing is overmoulded onto the blower.

10. The respiratory system of claim 7 , wherein the cushion is a nasal cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient's nose.

11. The respiratory system of claim 7 , wherein the headgear comprises an enclosed channel configured to receive wiring from the blower.

12. The respiratory system of claim 7 , further comprising a filter fitted over an inlet of the blower and attached to the headgear.

13. The respiratory system of claim 7 , wherein the blower is connected to the plenum chamber through the headgear.

14. A respiratory system configured to pressurize and deliver a flow of respiratory gas to a patient's airways, the respiratory system comprising:

a cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient's face, the cushion forming at least part of a plenum chamber;

a blower mounted to the plenum chamber and configured to pressurize a flow of respiratory gas;

a common gas flow path connecting the plenum chamber to the blower, the common gas flow path being configured to deliver the pressurized flow of respiratory gas from the blower to an aperture in the plenum chamber, the common gas flow path being configured to vent exhaled gas from the aperture in the plenum chamber to atmosphere; and

headgear configured to support the plenum chamber and the blower on the patient's face,

wherein the exhaled gas vented from the aperture in the plenum chamber is vented through the headgear.

15. The respiratory system of claim 14 , wherein the blower is encapsulated within a housing configured to mitigate the transmission of noise generated by the blower.

16. The respiratory system of claim 15 , wherein the housing is overmoulded onto the blower.

17. The respiratory system of claim 14 , wherein the cushion is a nasal cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient's nose.

18. The respiratory system of claim 14 , wherein the headgear comprises an enclosed channel configured to receive wiring from the blower.

19. The respiratory system of claim 14 , further comprising a muffler fitted over an inlet of the blower and attached to the headgear.

20. The respiratory system of claim 14 , wherein the blower is connected to the plenum chamber through the headgear.

21. The respiratory system of claim 14 , wherein the headgear comprises an aperture configured to fit around the common gas flow path.

22. The respiratory system of claim 14 , wherein the headgear comprises a central portion configured to be positioned between the blower and the plenum chamber at the common gas flow path.
