Abstract

Techniques where a computer or mobile device performs video analysis of a person performing a physical activity such as a basketball jump shot are described. The computer or mobile device performs video analysis to (1) determine a frame of the video data that depicts a body position of the person in a release phase of the basketball jump shot, (2) process pixels in the determined frame to determine data relating to a release point for the basketball jump shot, (3) process pixels in a plurality of the frames to determine whether the basketball jump shot resulted in the basketball going through a hoop as a made shot, and (4) repeat these operations for a plurality of basketball jump shots by the person to thereby track the made shots and the release point data for the plurality of basketball jump shots by the person.

determine a frame of the video data that depicts a body position of the person in a release phase of the basketball jump shot;

process pixels in the determined base phase frame to determine data relating to a knee bend for the basketball jump shot;

process pixels in the determined release phase frame to determine data relating to a release point for the basketball jump shot;

process pixels in a plurality of the frames to determine whether the basketball jump shot resulted in the basketball going through a hoop as a made shot; and

repeat the base phase frame determine operation, the release phase frame determine operation, the process operation relating to knee bend data, the process operation relating to release point data, and the process operation relating to the made shot determination for a plurality of basketball jump shots by the person to thereby track the made shots, the knee bend data, and the release point data for the plurality of basketball jump shots by the person.

2. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the release point data comprises data indicative of how quickly the person released the basketball for the basketball jump shots.

3. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the release point data comprises data indicative of a release pinnacle for the basketball jump shots.

4. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of processor-executable instructions are further configured to:

compare body positions of the person in the determined frames to reference skeletons that represent a fundamental basketball jump shot in the release and base phases;

determine deviations for the basketball jump shots from the fundamental basketball jump shot based on the comparisons; and

track the determined deviations in a database.

5. The computer program product of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of processor-executable instructions are further configured to:

correlate the determined deviations with the made shot data to identify a plurality of the determined deviations that are outcome-determinative.

6. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of processor-executable instructions are embodied by a mobile application for download onto a smart phone or tablet computer.

7. The computer program product of claim 6 , wherein the mobile application is configured to obtain the video data from a camera on the smart phone or tablet computer.

8. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of processor-executable instructions are further configured to:

process pixels in a plurality of the frames to determine data relating to an arc angle for the basketball jump shot; and

repeat the process operation relating to arc angle data for the plurality of basketball jump shots by the person to thereby also track the arc angle data for the plurality of basketball jump shots by the person.

9. A method for video analysis of a basketball jump shot, the method comprising:

processing video data, the video data comprising a plurality of frames of a person performing the basketball jump shot with a basketball, wherein the video data processing step comprises:

a processor determining a frame of the video data that depicts a body position of the person in a base phase of the basketball jump shot;

the processor determining a frame of the video data that depicts a body position of the person in a release phase of the basketball jump shot;

the processor processing pixels in the determined release phase frame to determine data relating to a release point for the basketball jump shot;

the processor processing pixels in a plurality of the frames to determine whether the basketball jump shot resulted in the basketball going through a hoop as a made shot; and

the processor repeating the base phase frame determining step, the release phase frame determining step, the processing step relating to knee bend data, the processing step relating to release point data, and the processing step relating to the made shot determination for a plurality of basketball jump shots by the person to thereby track the made shots, the knee bend data, and the release point data for the plurality of basketball jump shots by the person.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the release point data comprises data indicative of how quickly the person released the basketball for the basketball jump shots.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the release point data comprises data indicative of a release pinnacle for the basketball jump shots.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the video data processing step further comprises:
