Abstract

A measurement system is provided with an array of laser diodes with one or more Bragg reflectors. At least a portion of the light generated by the array is configured to penetrate tissue comprising skin. A detection system configured to: measure a phase shift, and a time-of-flight, of at least a portion of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from the tissue relative to the portion of the light generated by the array; generate one or more images of the tissue; detect oxy- or deoxy-hemoglobin in the tissue; non-invasively measure blood in blood vessels within or below a dermis layer within the skin; measure one or more physiological parameters based at least in part on the non-invasively measured blood; and measure a variation in the blood or physiological parameter over a period of time.

Claims (53)

1. A measurement system comprising:

an array of laser diodes configured to generate light having one or more optical wavelengths, wherein at least a portion of the one or more optical wavelengths is a near-infrared wavelength between 600 nanometers and 1000 nanometers, wherein at least a portion of the array of laser diodes comprises one or more Bragg reflectors, wherein the at least a portion of the array of laser diodes is configured to be modulated with a pulsed output with a pulse duration of approximately 0.5 to 2 nanoseconds and a pulse repetition rate of several Megahertz, and wherein the array of laser diodes is further coupled to driver electronics and a thermal management accessory;

a beam splitter configured to receive a portion of the light from the array of laser diodes and to direct at least some of the portion of the light from the array of laser diodes to tissue comprising skin, wherein the beam splitter is configured to separate the received portion of the light into a plurality of spatially separated lights;

a detection system comprising a photodiode array, wherein the detection system further comprises one or more lenses and one or more spectral filters in front of at least a part of the photodiode array, wherein the photodiode array is further coupled to a processor, and wherein the photodiode array comprises a plurality of pixels coupled to CMOS transistors;

wherein the photodiode array is configured to receive at least a portion of light reflected from the tissue comprising skin, wherein the photodiode array is configured to be synchronized to the at least a portion of the array of laser diodes comprising Bragg reflectors;

wherein the photodiode array is further configured to perform a time-of-flight measurement based on a time difference between a first time in which the at least a portion of the array of laser diodes generate light and a second time in which the photodiode array receives the at least a portion of light reflected from the tissue comprising skin;

the detection system further comprising a camera system coupled to the processor, wherein one or more optical filters and one or more adjustable lenses are configured to be coupled to the camera system, and wherein the camera system comprises an illuminator comprising one or more light emitting diodes, the camera system configured to capture one or more images including at least a part of the tissue comprising skin;

the detection system configured to non-invasively measure blood in blood vessels within or below a dermis layer within the skin based at least in part on reflection from the skin;

the detection system configured to measure absorption of hemoglobin; and

wherein the measurement system is configured to measure one or more physiological parameters based at least in part on the non-invasively measured blood within the tissue, and wherein the measurement system is configured to measure a variation in the blood within the tissue or the one or more physiological parameters over a period of time.

The measurement system of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the laser diodes in the array of laser diodes operate at a wavelength near 940 nanometers, and wherein the one or more physiological parameters are generated at least in part by using a Fourier transform of at least a part of an output from the processor.

The measurement system of claim 2 , wherein the measurement system is adapted to be mounted on or within a vehicle, or the measurement system is configured to be coupled to a smart phone or tablet, the smart phone or tablet comprising a wireless receiver, a wireless transmitter, a display, a voice input module, a speaker, a microprocessor and a touch screen.

The measurement system of claim 3 , wherein the measurement system is further configured to reduce an interference in the measured one or more physiological parameters by methodologies selected from a group consisting of: multivariate techniques, multiple linear regression, factor-based algorithms, partial least squares, principal component regression, mathematical derivatives, and differential measurement.

5. The measurement system of claim 3 , wherein the detection system is further configured to receive at least some of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from a chest region of a user to measure at least in part the one or more physiological parameters.

6. The measurement system of claim 2 , wherein the measurement system further comprises one or more polarizers arranged in front of at least a portion of the detection system, and wherein the beam splitter comprises one of a grating, a prism, or an optical dispersing element.

The measurement system of claim 2 , wherein the measurement system is configured to improve signal-to-noise ratio of at least a portion of the one or more physiological parameters by increasing light intensity of the array of laser diodes relative to an initial light intensity, and wherein the array of laser diodes comprises a plurality of bars of laser diodes positioned adjacent to one another and coupled to one another, wherein each laser diode of the array of laser diodes comprises one or more Bragg reflectors.

8. The measurement system of claim 1 , wherein the detection system is further configured to:

generate a first signal responsive to light received while the array of laser diodes is off; and

generate a second signal responsive to light received while at least part of the array of laser diodes is on, the light received while at least part of the array of laser diodes is on including at least some light reflected from the tissue comprising skin; and

wherein the measurement system is further configured to compare the first signal and the second signal and to generate the one or more physiological parameters at least in part based on the comparison.

9. A measurement system comprising:

an array of laser diodes to generate light having one or more optical wavelengths that includes at least one near-infrared wavelength between 600 nanometers and 1000 nanometers, at least one laser diode of the array comprises one or more Bragg reflectors;

at least one of the laser diodes to pulse at a modulation frequency between 10 Megahertz and 1 Gigahertz and to have a phase associated with the modulation frequency;

wherein at least a portion of the light generated by the array is configured to penetrate tissue comprising skin; and

a detection system comprising at least one photo-detector, a lens and a spectral filter at an input to the at least one photo-detector, and a processor to process digitized signals received from the at least one photo-detector, the detection system configured to (i) measure a phase shift of at least a portion of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from the tissue relative to the portion of the light generated by the array to penetrate the tissue, (ii) measure time-of-flight of at least a portion of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from the tissue relative to the portion of the light generated by the array to penetrate the tissue, (iii) generate one or more images of the tissue based at least in part on an amplitude of at least a portion of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from the tissue, and (iv) detect oxy- or deoxy-hemoglobin in the tissue;

the detection system configured to non-invasively measure blood in blood vessels within or below a dermis layer within the skin based at least in part on near-infrared diffuse reflection from the skin;

wherein the measurement system is configured to measure one or more physiological parameters based at least in part on the non-invasively measured blood within the tissue;

and wherein the measurement system is configured to measure a variation in the blood within the tissue or the one or more physiological parameters over a period of time.

The measurement system of claim 9 , wherein at least a part of the detection system is configured to be synchronized to the pulsing of the array of laser diodes, wherein at least some of the laser diodes in the array of laser diodes operate at a wavelength near 940 nanometers, and wherein the one or more physiological parameters are generated at least in part by using a Fourier transform of at least a part of an output from the processor.

11. The measurement system of claim 10 , wherein the detection system is further configured to:

receive light while the array of laser diodes is off and covert the received light into a first signal;

receive light while at least a part of the array of laser diodes is on and convert the received light into a second signal, the received light including at least a part of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from the tissue; and

wherein the processor of the detection system is configured to difference the first signal and the second signal.

The measurement system of claim 11 , wherein the detection system further comprises a camera, wherein one or more optical filters and one or more adjustable lenses are configured to be coupled to the camera, and wherein the camera further comprises an illuminator comprising one or more light emitting diodes.

The measurement system of claim 11 , wherein the measurement system is further configured to reduce an interference in the measured one or more physiological parameters by methodologies selected from a group consisting of: multivariate techniques, multiple linear regression, factor-based algorithms, partial least squares, principal component regression, mathematical derivatives, and differential measurement.

The measurement system of claim 11 , wherein the measurement system is adapted to be mounted on or within a vehicle, or the measurement system is configured to be coupled to a smart phone or tablet, the smart phone or tablet comprising a wireless receiver, a wireless transmitter, a display, a voice input module, a speaker, a microprocessor and a touch screen.

15. The measurement system of claim 11 , wherein the detection system is configured to further receive at least some of the light from the array of laser diodes reflected from a chest region of a user to measure at least in part the one or more physiological parameters.

16. A remote sensing system comprising:

an array of laser diodes configured to generate light having an initial light intensity and one or more optical wavelengths, wherein at least a portion of the one or more optical wavelengths is a near-infrared wavelength between 700 nanometers and 2500 nanometers, wherein at least a portion of the array of laser diodes comprises one or more Bragg reflectors, wherein the at least a portion of the array of laser diodes is configured to be modulated with a pulsed output with a pulse duration of approximately 0.5 to 2 nanoseconds and a pulse repetition rate of several Megahertz, and wherein the array of laser diodes is further coupled to driver electronics, one or more safety shut-offs, and a thermal management accessory;

a beam splitter configured to receive a portion of the light from the array of laser diodes and to direct at least some of the portion of the light from the array of laser diodes to an object, wherein the beam splitter is configured to separate the received portion of the light into a plurality of spatially separated lights;

a detection system comprising a photodiode array, wherein the detection system further comprises one or more lenses and one or more spectral filters in front of at least a part of the photodiode array, wherein the photodiode array is further coupled to a processor, and wherein the photodiode array comprises a plurality of pixels coupled to CMOS transistors;

wherein the detection system is configured to receive at least a portion of light reflected from the object, and wherein the detection system is configured to be synchronized to the at least a portion of the array of laser diodes comprising Bragg reflectors;

wherein the detection system is further configured to perform a time-of-flight measurement based on a time difference between a first time in which the at least a portion of the array of laser diodes generate light and a second time in which the photodiode array receives the at least a portion of light reflected from the object;

a camera system coupled to a lens system and the processor, the camera system configured to capture one or more images including at least a part of the object, and wherein the camera system comprises an illuminator comprising one or more light emitting diodes;

wherein the remote sensing system is configured to combine at least a portion of the one or more images and at least a portion of the time-of-flight measurement; and

wherein the remote sensing system is coupled to a smart phone or tablet, the smart phone or tablet comprising a wireless receiver, a wireless transmitter, a display, a voice input module, a speaker, a microprocessor and a touch screen.

17. The remote sensing system of claim 16 , wherein at least some of the laser diodes in the array of laser diodes operate at a wavelength near 940 nanometers.

The remote sensing system of claim 17 , wherein the remote sensing system further comprises one or more polarizers arranged in front of at least a portion of the detection system or the camera system, or wherein the remote sensing system further comprises one or more holographic gratings between the array of laser diodes and the detection system.

19. The remote sensing system of claim 17 , wherein the detection system or the camera system is further configured to:

generate a first signal responsive to light received while the array of laser diodes is off; and

generate a second signal responsive to light received while at least part of the array of laser diodes is on, the light received while at least part of the array of laser diodes is on including at least some light reflected from the object; and

wherein the remote sensing system is configured to compare the first signal and the second signal and to generate the combined portion of the one or more images and portion of the time-of-flight measurement at least in part based on the comparison.

The remote sensing system of claim 17 , wherein the remote sensing system is configured to improve signal-to-noise ratio of at least a portion of the combined portion of the one or more images and portion of the time-of-flight measurement by increasing light intensity of the array of laser diodes relative to the initial light intensity, and wherein the array of laser diodes comprises a plurality of bars of laser diodes positioned adjacent to one another and coupled to one another, wherein each laser diode of the array of laser diodes comprises one or more Bragg reflectors.
