Abstract

Drainage systems for excess body fluids and associated methods are disclosed herein. A body fluid drainage system in accordance with an embodiment of the present technology, for example, can include a catheter that has an exterior surface, a proximal portion, and a distal portion opposite the proximal portion. The body fluid drainage system can further include a valve device, a pressure sensor, and a controller operatively coupled to the valve device and the pressure sensor. The valve device can include an actuator positioned over the exterior surface of the catheter. The actuator is movable between an open position that allows body fluid flow through the catheter, a closed position that at least substantially obstructs the body fluid flow through the catheter, and intermediate positions that partially obstruct the body fluid flow through the catheter. The controller can change the position of the actuator in response to a predetermined condition of the pressure sensor.

Claims (25)

1. A fluid control device comprising:

a catheter having a proximal portion and a distal portion opposite the proximal portion, wherein the proximal portion is configured to be in fluid communication with an area of excess body fluid;

a valve configured to control flow through the catheter;

a pressure sensor configured to measure a pressure within the catheter and a flow rate sensor configured to measure a flow rate within the catheter; and

a controller operatively coupled to the valve and at least one of the pressure sensor and the flow rate sensor, wherein the controller is configured to;

adjust a position of the valve to change the resistance to flow through the catheter in response to at least one of: input from the pressure sensor; input from flow rate the flow rate sensor; patient orientation; retrograde flow; a siphoning condition; intracranial pressure (ICP); or peritoneal pressure, and

close the valve for a period of time and compare a pressure response measured over the period of time to an expected time required for a measured pressure to return to a predetermined baseline value.

2. The fluid control device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is additionally configured to close the valve in response to detection of a negative pressure gradient.

3. The fluid control device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is additionally configured to ignore transient pressure conditions due to at least one of a cardiac cycle, coughing and patient movement.

4. The fluid control device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion of the catheter has an inlet configured to be implanted into a ventricle of a patient's brain.

5. The fluid control device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion of the catheter has an inlet configured to be inserted into a patient's lumbar region.

6. The fluid control device of claim 1 , further comprising a cartridge housing configured for passage of the catheter.

7. The fluid control device of claim 6 , wherein the cartridge housing and the controller have positive engagement mechanisms providing assembly with a predetermined geometry.

8. The fluid control device of claim 6 , wherein the cartridge housing is configured to be disposable after use and the controller is configured to be reusable.

9. The fluid control device of claim 6 , wherein the pressure sensor and/or the flow rate sensor is housed in the cartridge housing.

10. The fluid control device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is additionally configured to close the valve for a period of time and compare a pressure response measured over the period of time to an expected pressure for unobstructed flow during the period of time.

11. The fluid control device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is additionally configured to close the valve for a period of time and to detect pressure changes during the period.

12. The fluid control device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is additionally configured to close the valve for a period of time, to open the valve following the period of time, and to detect pressure changes following opening of the valve.

13. The fluid control device of claim 1 comprising at least one flow rate sensor, wherein the controller is additionally configured to close the valve for a period of time and to detect flow rate during or after the period of time.

14. The fluid control device of claim 1 comprising at least one flow rate sensor, wherein the controller is additionally configured to close the valve for a period of time and to compare a flow rate response measured over the period of time to an expected flow rate for unobstructed flow during the period of time.

15. The fluid control device of claim 1 comprising multiple valves positioned along the catheter, wherein the controller is additionally configured to adjust the position of each valve independently to produce a desired flow rate through the catheter.

16. The fluid control device of claim 1 , additionally comprising a fluid reservoir positioned between the proximal and distal portions of the catheter, wherein the fluid reservoir is compressible to create forced flow through the catheter.

17. The fluid control device of claim 16 , wherein the controller is additionally configured to detect and interpret at least one of pressure and flow rate changes in the catheter during the forced flow and to identify partial or complete blockages in the catheter.

18. The fluid control device of claim 16 , wherein the controller is additionally configured to periodically evacuate the reservoir toward at least one of the proximal and distal portions of the catheter.

19. The fluid control device of claim 16 , wherein the reservoir is compressible to flush fluid proximally and/or distally through the catheter.
