Abstract

Systems and methods for providing location-restricted message exchange include receiving, by a system provider device over a network from a sender device, a location-restricted message that includes sender message information and first location information that is associated with a first location. The system provider device then receives, over the network from a first receiver device, second location information that is associated with a second location. The system provider device then determines that the second location is in a limited geographic message exchange area with the first location and, in response, sends at least some of the sender message information by the system provider device over the network to the first receiver device. They system provider device may use filtering criteria provided by the first or second receiver device and use that filtering criteria to determine whether to send the sender message information to the first or second receiver device.

Claims (59)

1. A system, comprising:

a processor;

a network interface device; and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon instructions executable to cause the system to perform operations comprising:

receiving an indication of a receiver device location of a receiver device that is located in a message exchange area;

receiving, through the network interface device from a sender device of a sender that is located in the message exchange area, a location-restricted message that includes sender-generated content and a location of the sender, wherein the sender and a user of the receiver device have no predefined social relationship;

wirelessly transmitting, through the network interface device based on the receiver device location being in the message exchange area, location-restricted message data to the receiver device, the location-restricted message data including data configured to cause a display of a graphical user interface on the receiver device to show information including:

the sender-generated content,

a graphical representation of the message exchange area; and

a visual indicator within the graphical representation of the message exchange area of a location for the sender;

receiving, through the network interface device from the receiver device, receiver-generated content; and

causing wireless transmission, through the network interface device to the sender device, of the receiver-generated content and an indication the receiver device location is within the message exchange area.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

accessing receiver filtering criteria; and

identifying, based on the receiver filtering criteria, the receiver as a qualified recipient of the location-restricted message data, wherein the wirelessly transmitting the location-restricted message data to the receiver device is based on the receiver device location being within the message exchange area and the receiver being the qualified recipient of the location-restricted message data.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving the receiver filtering criteria from the receiver device prior to transmission of the location-restricted message data.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving the receiver filtering criteria from a device other than the receiver device or the sender device prior to transmission of the location-restricted message data.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the receiver-generated content includes data based on a selection of a button displayed on the graphical user interface of the receiver device.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the visual indicator indicates the sender device location as corresponding to a limited region within the message exchange area.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving, from the receiver device, a selection of the visual indicator; and

providing a subsequent indicator that more specifically identifies the sender device location within the limited region of the message exchange area.

8. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a system provider device through a network from a sender device of a sender that is located in a message exchange area, a location-restricted message that includes sender message information, and a first sender location of the sender that is within the message exchange area;

determining, by the system provider device via communications through the network with a plurality of receiver devices of a plurality of receivers, a set of one or more receiver devices of the plurality of receiver devices that have locations that are within the message exchange area, wherein at least a particular receiver of the receivers has no predefined social relationship with the sender;

wirelessly transmitting, by the system provider device through the network to each of the set of receiver devices and based on respective first receiver locations for the set of receiver devices being within the message exchange area, location-specific data that causes a display of a graphical user interface on each of the set of receiver devices to show information including:

the sender message information;

a graphical representation of the message exchange area; and

a visual indicator within the graphical representation of the message exchange area of a location for the sender;

receiving, by the system provider through the network from a particular receiver device of the particular receiver, receiver-generated content; and

wirelessly transmitting, by the system provider device through the network to the sender device, the receiver-generated content and an indication that the particular receiver device is within the message exchange area and has received the sender message information.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

accessing receiver filtering criteria; and

identifying, based on the receiver filtering criteria, the particular receiver as a qualified recipient of the location-specific data, wherein the wirelessly transmitting the location-restricted message data to the receiver device is based on the receiver device location being within the message exchange area and the receiver being the qualified recipient of the location-specific data.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving the receiver filtering criteria from the receiver device prior to transmission of the location-specific data.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving the receiver filtering criteria from a device other than the receiver device prior to transmission of the location specific data.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the system provider device comprises the sender device.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the receiver-generated content includes data based on a selection of a button displayed on the graphical user interface of the receiver device.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the sender message information includes an offer specific to devices located within the message exchange area.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein the sender message information includes information about a purchase of an item.

16. The method of claim 8 , wherein the receiver-generated content includes a selection of one single option from a plurality of options offered within the sender message information.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon instructions executable by a computer system to cause the computer system to perform operations comprising:

receiving an indication of a receiver device location of a receiver device that is located in a message exchange area;

receiving, through a network interface device from a sender device of a sender that is located in the message exchange area, a location-restricted message that includes sender-generated content and a location of the sender, wherein the sender and a user of the receiver device have no predefined social relationship;

wirelessly transmitting, through the network interface device based on the receiver device location being in the message exchange area, location-restricted message data to the receiver device, the location-restricted message data including data configured to cause a display of a graphical user interface on the receiver device to show information including:

the sender-generated content,

a graphical representation of the message exchange area; and

a visual indicator within the graphical representation of the message exchange area of a location for the sender;

receiving, through the network interface device from the receiver device, receiver-generated content; and

causing wireless transmission, through the network interface device to the sender device, of the receiver-generated content and an indication the receiver device location is within the message exchange area.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the operations further comprise:

accessing receiver filtering criteria; and

identifying, based on the receiver filtering criteria, the receiver as a qualified recipient of the location-restricted message data, wherein the wirelessly transmitting the location-restricted message data to the receiver device is based on the receiver device location being within the message exchange area and the receiver being the qualified recipient of the location-restricted message data.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the receiver-generated content is transmitted to a plurality of sender devices including the sender device.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the receiver-generated content includes data based on a selection of an input option displayed on the graphical user interface of the receiver device in associating with the sender-generated content.
