Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed herein that generally involve CED devices with various features for reducing or preventing backflow. In some embodiments, CED devices include a tissue-receiving space disposed proximal to a distal fluid outlet. Tissue can be compressed into or pinched/pinned by the tissue-receiving space as the device is inserted into a target region of a patient, thereby forming a seal that reduces or prevents proximal backflow of fluid ejected from the outlet beyond the tissue-receiving space. In some embodiments, CED devices include a bullet-shaped nose proximal to a distal fluid outlet. The bullet-shaped nose forms a good seal with surrounding tissue and helps reduce or prevent backflow of infused fluid.

Claims (23)

1. A micro-molding device comprising:

a mold cavity sized and configured to receive a portion of a catheter body and a portion of a catheter micro-tip therein, the catheter micro-tip being separate from the catheter body, such that a proximal opening of a fluid channel of the catheter micro-tip is at least partially disposed within a corresponding distal opening of a fluid line of the catheter body, and a distal opening of the fluid channel of the catheter micro-tip extends forwardly of the mold cavity;

a mold channel configured so that a mold fluid can be injected to fill the mold cavity and secure the catheter micro-tip to the catheter body with the mold fluid; and

a transparent portion adjacent to the mold cavity configured to allow UV light to pass therethrough to cure mold fluid disposed within the mold cavity.

2. The micro-molding device of claim 1 , wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured to form a bullet nose portion over the catheter micro-tip and over at least a portion of an outer sheath received in the mold cavity.

3. The micro-molding device of claim 1 , wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured such that proximal openings of a plurality of fluid channels of the catheter micro-tip are at least partially disposed within corresponding distal openings of a plurality of fluid lines of the catheter body.

4. The micro-molding device of claim 2 , wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured such that the bullet nose portion is proximal to the distal opening in the fluid channel of the catheter micro-tip and the catheter micro-tip extends distally from the bullet nose portion.

5. A micro-molding system comprising:

a micro-molding device according to claim 1 ;

the catheter body; and

the catheter micro-tip.

6. The micro-molding system of claim 5 , further comprising an outer sheath extending over a portion of the catheter micro-tip; and wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured to form a bullet nose portion over the catheter micro-tip and over at least a portion of the outer sheath received in the mold cavity.

7. The micro-molding system of claim 5 , wherein the catheter micro-tip includes a plurality of fluid channels having proximal openings; the catheter body includes a plurality of fluid lines having distal openings; and the mold cavity is sized and configured such that the proximal openings of the plurality of fluid channels of the catheter micro-tip are at least partially disposed within the corresponding distal openings of the plurality of fluid lines of the catheter body.

8. The micro-molding system of claim 6 , wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured such that the bullet nose portion is proximal to the distal opening of the fluid channel of the catheter micro-tip and the catheter micro-tip extends distally from the bullet nose portion.

9. A method for securing a catheter micro-tip to a catheter body, where the catheter micro-tip is separate from the catheter body and includes at least one fluid channel, each fluid channel having a proximal opening, the method comprising:

providing a micro-molding device according to claim 1 ;

providing the catheter body;

providing the catheter micro-tip;

positioning the catheter body and the catheter micro-tip in the mold cavity such that the proximal opening of each fluid channel of the micro-tip is at least partially disposed within a corresponding distal opening of a fluid line of the catheter body;

injecting the mold fluid through the mold channel to fill the mold cavity and secure the catheter micro-tip to the catheter body such that the at least one fluid channel of the catheter micro-tip is in fluid communication with the fluid line of the catheter body and such that a distal opening of the fluid channel of the micro-tip extends beyond the mold fluid.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured to form a bullet nose portion over the micro-tip and over at least a portion of an outer sheath received in the mold cavity.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured such that at least two proximal openings of the fluid channel of the micro-tip is at least partially disposed within at least two corresponding distal openings of the fluid line of the catheter body.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the mold cavity is sized and configured such that the bullet nose is proximal to the distal opening in the fluid channel of the micro-tip and the micro-tip extends distally from the bullet nose.
