Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer program products are provided for presenting content in accordance with a placement designation. One example method includes identifying terms associated with a campaign, the campaign having an associated content item that is presented to users responsive to requests for content, receiving an indication of a placement designation including targeting criteria for presenting the content item in a search suggestion control along with search suggestions, storing information associated with the campaign, and processing content requests.

Claims (54)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, from a content provider, a phrase through a text entry box of a user interface;

determining, based on the phrase, a set of matching query options for the phrase, including at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase;

providing a reach control that visually presents reach information that indicates an estimated number of users to be presented with a content item, for one or more of the matching query options within the user interface that is presenting the set of matching query options;

detecting interactions with placement controls corresponding to one or more placement options from among a plurality of placement options that are visually presented in the user interface, wherein each placement option indicates a different type of presentation location for the content item;

presenting, in reaction to each of the interactions, different previews of how the content item will appear to a user when visually presented in the types of the presentation locations, corresponding to the placement controls with which the interactions occurred;

receiving, through the user interface, a selection of at least one placement control from among the placement controls and at least one matching query option from among the set of matching query options; and

distributing the content item according to the selection of at least one placement control based on the at least one matching query option.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, for the at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase, one or more search suggestions for completing the phrase, the one or more search suggestions being based on predictions of a completed search query to be entered by the user.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

in response to determining that a partial search string that matches the at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase has been entered by the user into a search control presented at a user device, presenting an inline search suggestion control at the user device along with the one or more search suggestions.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

in response to determining that a partial search string that matches the at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase has been entered by the user into a search control presented at a user device, distributing, for at least one search suggestion of the one or more search suggestions, an additional content item that has been associated with the at least one search suggestion.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein distributing the content item includes generating an instance of the content item that is suitable for presentation by a device of the user, given the placement option corresponding to the selection of the at least one placement control.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a plurality of query option controls within the user interface, each query option control being associated with a different query option for the phrase.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a plurality of content item specification controls within the user interface, including two or more of (i) a text content control for specifying text of the content item, (ii) a graphical content control for specifying graphics of the content item, or (iii) a link content control for specifying a web resource to be linked to the content item.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placement controls include a placement control for specifying that the content item is to be presented within a top portion of an interface presented at a user device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placement controls include a placement control for specifying that the content item is to be presented within a side portion of an interface presented at a user device.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the placement controls include a placement control for specifying that the content item is to be presented at an inline search suggestion control presented at a user device.

11. A non-transitory computer storage medium encoded with instructions that when executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a content provider, a phrase through a text entry box of a user interface;

determining, based on the phrase, a set of matching query options for the phrase, including at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase;

providing a reach control that visually presents reach information that indicates an estimated number of users to be presented with a content item, for one or more of the matching query options within the user interface that is presenting the set of matching query options;

detecting interactions with placement controls corresponding to one or more placement options from among a plurality of placement options that are visually presented in the user interface, wherein each placement option indicates a different type of presentation location for the content item;

presenting, in reaction to each of the interactions, different previews of how the content item will appear to a user when visually presented in the types of the presentation locations, corresponding to the placement controls with which the interactions occurred;

receiving, through the user interface, a selection of at least one placement control from among the placement controls and at least one matching query option from among the set of matching query options; and

distributing the content item according to the selection of at least one placement control based on the at least one matching query option.

12. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 11 , the operations further comprising:

determining, for the at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase, one or more search suggestions for completing the phrase, the one or more search suggestions being based on predictions of a completed search query to be entered by the user.

13. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 11 , wherein distributing the content item includes generating an instance of the content item that is suitable for presentation by a device of the user, given the placement option corresponding to the selection of the at least one placement control.

14. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 11 , the operations further comprising:

providing a plurality of query option controls within the user interface, each query option control being associated with a different query option for the phrase.

15. The non-transitory computer storage medium of claim 11 , the operations further comprising:

providing a plurality of content item specification controls within the user interface, including two or more of (i) a text content control for specifying text of the content item, (ii) a graphical content control for specifying graphics of the content item, or (iii) a link content control for specifying a web resource to be linked to the content item.

16. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memory elements including instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a content provider, a phrase through a text entry box of a user interface;

determining, based on the phrase, a set of matching query options for the phrase, including at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase;

providing a reach control that visually presents reach information that indicates an estimated number of users to be presented with a content item, for one or more of the matching query options within the user interface that is presenting the set of matching query options;

detecting interactions with placement controls corresponding to one or more placement options from among a plurality of placement options that are visually presented in the user interface, wherein each placement option indicates a different type of presentation location for the content item;

presenting, in reaction to each of the interactions, different previews of how the content item will appear to a user when visually presented in the types of the presentation locations, corresponding to the placement controls with which the interactions occurred;

receiving, through the user interface, a selection of at least one placement control from among the placement controls and at least one matching query option from among the set of matching query options; and

distributing the content item according to the selection of at least one placement control based on the at least one matching query option.

17. The system of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

determining, for the at least one query option that includes less than all of the text of the phrase, one or more search suggestions for completing the phrase, the one or more search suggestions being based on predictions of a completed search query to be entered by the user.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein distributing the content item includes generating an instance of the content item that is suitable for presentation by a device of the user, given the placement option corresponding to the selection of the at least one placement control.

19. The system of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

providing a plurality of query option controls within the user interface, each query option control being associated with a different query option for the phrase.

20. The system of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

providing a plurality of content item specification controls within the user interface, including two or more of (i) a text content control for specifying text of the content item, (ii) a graphical content control for specifying graphics of the content item, or (iii) a link content control for specifying a web resource to be linked to the content item.
