Abstract

The present application relates to a method for disinfection of a temperature control device for human body temperature control during extracorporeal circulation which temperature control is conducted by use of a heat exchanger and a temperature control liquid circulating through the heat exchanger and the temperature control device. According to the present application, the temperature control device is connected to a temperature control liquid supply and, during operation of the temperature control device for human body temperature control, a disinfectant is selectively added to the temperature control liquid supply upstream of the temperature control device.

Claims (22)

1. A human body temperature control system for heating and/or cooling blood from a human body during extracorporeal circulation, the system comprising:

a temperature control liquid supply including a temperature control liquid, the temperature control liquid including a disinfectant to inhibit microbial growth in the human body temperature control system;

a temperature control device for heating and/or cooling the temperature control liquid;

a heat exchanger disposed at a location separate from the temperature control device, the heat exchanger adapted for exchanging heat between the blood and the temperature control liquid; and

fluid conduits configured to couple together the temperature control liquid supply, the temperature control device, and the heat exchanger to form a temperature control circuit,

wherein the heat exchanger includes a temperature control liquid side circulating the temperature control liquid from the temperature control liquid supply and the temperature control device, and a blood side circulating the blood from the human body through the heat exchanger, such that heat is exchanged between the blood and the temperature control liquid.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the disinfectant includes one or more of hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and citric acid.

The system of claim 1 , further comprising a disinfecting device and at least one of a display by which a user can control settings of a disinfection procedure conducted by the disinfecting device, and a remote control terminal by which a user can remotely control settings of the disinfection procedure conducted by the disinfecting device.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a disinfectant sensor configured to measure a concentration of the disinfectant in the temperature control liquid, wherein

the concentration of the disinfectant measured by the disinfectant sensor is used to determine whether to add additional disinfectant to the temperature control liquid.

The system of claim 4 , further comprising at least one of: a first container configured to receive a first portion of the temperature control liquid to which additional disinfectant may be added, and a second container configured to receive a second portion of the temperature control liquid to which additional disinfectant may be added.

6. The system of claim 4 , further comprising a computer configured to control adding the additional disinfectant into the temperature control liquid.

7. A human body temperature control system for heating and/or cooling blood from a human body during extracorporeal circulation, the system comprising:

a temperature control liquid supply including a temperature control liquid, the temperature control liquid including a disinfectant to inhibit microbial growth in the human body temperature control system;

a temperature control device for heating and/or cooling the temperature control liquid;

a heat exchanger disposed at a location separate from the temperature control device, the heat exchanger adapted for exchanging heat between the blood and the temperature control liquid;

a disinfectant sensor configured to measure a concentration of the disinfectant in the temperature control liquid; and

fluid conduits configured to couple together the temperature control liquid supply, the temperature control device, and the heat exchanger to form a temperature control circuit;

wherein the heat exchanger includes a temperature control liquid side circulating the temperature control liquid from the temperature control liquid supply and the temperature control device, and a blood side circulating the blood from the human body through the heat exchanger, such that heat is exchanged between the blood and the temperature control liquid.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the disinfectant sensor is situated in the temperature control device.

9. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a computer coupled to the disinfectant sensor and configured to provide additional disinfectant to the temperature control liquid based on the concentration of the disinfectant measured by the disinfectant sensor.
