Abstract

Provided herein are methods and systems for improved storage strategies for use of collections of storage resources, such as solid state drives, including in connection with a converged networking and storage node that may be used for virtualization of a collection of physically attached and/or network-connected storage resources.

Claims (19)

1. A system, comprising:

a virtualized cluster of storage resources comprising a local physical storage device and a remote physical storage device;

a host computer that executes a host operating system; and

a converged networking and storage system coupled to the host computer, wherein the converged networking and storage system comprises a physical target storage media controller that exposes virtual functions to the host computer, a physical network interface controller that exposes virtual functions to the host computer, and a direct connection between the physical target storage media controller and the physical network interface controller, wherein the local physical storage device is attached to the physical target storage media controller, wherein the local physical storage device communicates with the physical target storage media controller using a storage protocol, wherein the remote physical storage device is attached to a remote device, wherein the remote physical storage device communicates with the remote device using a storage protocol, wherein the converged networking and storage system manages the virtualized cluster of storage resources to be responsive to a local attached storage operation of the host operating system so that in one operation data stored remotely on the remote physical storage device is communicated from the remote physical storage device, across a network, into the converged networking and storage system via the physical network interface controller, over the direct connection without intervention of the host operating system, and to the host computer, wherein the converged networking and storage system is operable such that a storage resource on the remote physical storage device is configured in a single-step configuration operation, wherein the single-step configuration operation includes: 1) the converged networking and storage system causing a quality of service parameter for the remote physical storage device to be set, and 2) the converged networking and storage system causing a quality of service parameter for a network data path between the converged networking and storage system and the remote device to be set.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the local attached storage operation of the host operating system is a read operation that is carried out in response to an NVMe read command received from the host computer onto the converged networking and storage system, and wherein the quality of service parameter for the network data path is a bandwidth parameter.

3. A converged networking and storage system, comprising:

a host bus interface for coupling the converged networking and storage system to a host computer, wherein the host computer executes an operating system;

a storage interface port for coupling the converged networking and storage system to a local physical storage device;

a network interface port for coupling the converged networking and storage system via a network data path to a remote device, wherein a remote physical storage device is attached to the remote device;

a physical target storage media controller that exposes virtual functions to the host computer, wherein the physical target storage media controller communicates with the local physical storage device across the storage interface port using a storage protocol;

a physical network interface controller that exposes virtual functions to the host computer, wherein the physical target storage media controller is linked to the physical network interface controller by a direct connection, wherein the converged networking and storage system is responsive to a local attached storage operation of the host operating system so that in one operation data stored remotely on the remote physical storage device is communicated from the remote physical storage device, through the remote device, across the network data path, into the converged networking and storage system via the network interface port, through the physical network interface controller, over the direct connection without intervention of the host operating system, across the host bus interface and to the host computer, wherein the converged networking and storage system is operable such that a storage resource on the remote physical storage device is configured in a single-step configuration operation, wherein the single-step configuration operation includes: 1) the converged networking and storage system causing a quality of service parameter for the remote physical storage device to be set, and 2) the converged networking and storage system causing a quality of service parameter for a network data path between the converged networking and storage system and the remote device to be set.

4. The converged networking and storage system of claim 3 , wherein the quality of service parameter for the network data path is a bandwidth parameter, and wherein the bandwidth parameter is set in preparation for the communication of the data across the network data path from the remote device to the physical network interface controller.

5. The converged networking and storage system of claim 4 , wherein the data is communicated from across the network data path from the remote device to the physical network interface controller in the form of NVMe protocol traffic tunneled over Ethernet.

6. The converged networking and storage system of claim 5 , wherein the local attached storage operation of the host operating system is a read transaction operation.

7. The converged networking and storage system of claim 6 , wherein a transaction completion arrives at the operating system executing on the host computer.

8. The converged networking and storage system of claim 3 , wherein the data is stored on physical storage media, and wherein the location of the physical storage media that stores the data is hidden from the operating system.

9. The converged networking and storage system of claim 3 , wherein the converged networking and storage system is an I/O controller card.

10. The converged networking and storage system of claim 3 , wherein the direct connection performs NVMe over Ethernet tunneling and un-tunneling, and wherein the NVMe over Ethernet tunneling and un-tunneling is performed without intervention of the operating system.

11. The converged networking and storage system of claim 3 , wherein the physical target storage media controller communicates with the local physical storage device using a protocol taken from the group consisting of: SAS, ATA, SATA and NMVe.
